Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cameron Derby. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Cameron with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I think my work ethic is just a part of who I am, and most definitely comes from how I was raised in Akron, OH. I believe that you receive back what you put into something, and if it’s something you love to do, you’ll do what you can to continue to do it.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’ve always been a creative person and have been drawing since I was young. With my parents both being artists, I remember always doing fun art projects and watching my parents work. I started with photography in high school and continued photography into college, graduating with a Bachelor’s in Photography from Columbia College Chicago. After graduating, I really started to take my drawing seriously and begin focusing on portraiture. My love for people, art, and culture is what motivates most of my artwork. Over the years my artistic goals and work has grown in many directions, including teaching drawing to kids and teens, but my main focus at the moment is to continue to grow my freelance business which includes fine art, and photography. I’m also beginning some other projects which I can eventually speak more about, but I’m excited to say will expand my artwork to fashion accessories, and more importantly to the youth in the community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back I think that, my determination to do what I love most, my open mindedness, and support have been the most impactful parts of my journey so far. My advice for anyone looking to continue their own artistic journey, is to never be too hard on yourself, go with your intuition and allow yourself to grow.
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
The most helpful and supportive people in my life have been most definitely my family and friends. They genuinely care, and support what I do and that’s all I could really ask for. When times have been overwhelming or felt uncertain my family and friends have always been there. They know who they are!
