Meet Camplife Customs

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Camplife Customs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Camplife, thanks for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re very focused on here – improving our ability to make decisions. Everyday, we’re faced with decisions that can impact the future of our careers, businesses, relationships and more and so one of the most impactful areas for personal development, in our view, is decision-making. Can you talk to us about how you developed or improved your decision-making skills?
We developed our decision making skills as a team from the very beginning. As partners we work diligently to ensure that when it comes to the decisions that will scale the company we communicate thoroughly. Bobby is really good at painting the big picture and Adam is really good at fleshing out the steps to get there and together we’ve become really good at making the decisions to get to that first step and continue the process. When it comes to decisions regarding the products of the company we are both on the same page that it’s of the highest and most resilient quality to ensure that these homes on wheels are safe and long lasting.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We are the founders and owners of Camplife Customs. We offer custom built vans such as Sprinters, Promasters, or Transits. Camplife Customs mission statement is – we help make the outdoors feel like home. Which directly correlates into why we’re fierce believers of not only having a cool looking van conversion but more importantly a safe and quality built van conversion. All our builds begin with a steel fabricated base to ensure longevity and we work closely with our customers regarding all details of their van build so they truly get the custom experience. You can always find the Camplife Customs team representing at the various Adventure Van Expos on the west coast! We will also be launching an ecommerce store on the website this year for van owners to purchase the various items needed for a build. And also be on the lookout for our partner company Campluxe Cabovers if you’re in the market for a poptop truck camper in lieu of a full van build.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
We would say:

– Fabrication skills and the knowledge of what makes a safe and quality built fabricated structure/base.

– Knowledge about the vehicle industry as a whole

– Resilience in the face of hardships such as starting a business during Covid, dealing with unhappy clients, figuring out how to get around the supply and demand shortage, and so much more…

The advice we have is when starting a business do your research about the industry you’re trying to break into. Think about the skills you already have and use them as much as you can but also be willing to learn other skills from the people around you.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
In our industry an ideal client is one who understands that the build process does take time. That takes something of this magnitude as seriously as we do. We always say that we’re essentially building a home for people that’s mobile and you can’t rush that process if you want the outcome to be safe and long lasting. We appreciate clients who know what they want built but allow a little creative freedom for our team and are comfortable handing the reigns over. Patience when it comes to components being installed and the coming together of the van as a whole is also appreciated because we aren’t a one stop shop. We outsource items and so we’re not always in control of other vendors time frames, inventory, and delivery dates.
But most of all we LOVE a client who is just as excited as we are about the journey they’re going to embark on. The ones who come in during various build stages and are just exuding stoke and good vibes.
