Meet Candace Suero

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Candace Suero. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Candace Suero below.

Candace Suero, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Since creating Tenderoni Lashes, I’ve had the pleasure of working on many brilliant people: musicians, influencers, actors, creators, etc. Feeling like an ‘imposter’ often comes with the territory. When we’re in the same rooms as people we admire, we often tend to ask ourselves, “Why us?” instead of “Why not, us?”

Overcoming imposter syndrome came from my desire to develop a strong sense of self, operate through gratitude and align with my purpose. When you have a strong sense of self, you become aware of what your strengths are, making it easier to utilize those in the most authentic and impactful ways. Practicing gratitude allows me to focus on the present instead of ruminating in the past or worrying about the future, two things that can negatively impact one’s state of mind when it comes to business. Operating through purpose rather than ego, has helped to ground me, and made stepping into power more comfortable.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I was born and raised in San Diego and moved to Los Angeles in 2018. A licensed Esthetician, I’ve owned a small business called Tenderoni Lashes for the past 11 years where I specialize in custom eyelash extensions. I love writing, binging a good playlist, experimenting in the kitchen, indulging in black and white films, and traveling with my husband. At 34, I’ve also unashamedly made a hobby out of homeaking in my spare time. I’m a lash pro, friend, wife, unofficial therapist, daughter, caretaker of an amazing grandma, and mother to two beloved pugs named Lady D and Charles.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Three qualities that are most impactful in my own career are versatility, resourcefulness, and discipline. Versatility because you will need to wear many hats if you own a small business, and you’ll need to learn to adapt to change as the years go by, in order to know what clients / customers want. Having a good sense of resourcefulness helps cut costs, resulting in a larger budget for your day-to-day operations. Discipline is an important quality to have because you need to constantly track your expenses and stay on top of your day-to-day responsibilities in order to maintain a long-lasting, successful small business in today’s climate. You will not stay in business long if you are not holding yourself accountable when it comes to your goals.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I feel overwhelmed, I take deep breaths to increase my vibration and calm my nervous system. I’ll sometimes distract myself by watching something funny, going for a quick walk, or listening to uplifting music. My advice is to cut yourself off when you feel you’re headed towards a downward spiral, breathe, and take a a little time to unwind and restore your happiness through distraction. Ruminating in anger and frustration can do more harm than good if you’re not proactive in restoring a sense of peace and order within yourself.
