We were lucky to catch up with Carla Higham recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Carla, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
When I was in fifth grade we used to carry around these paper folders and doodle a lot on them. A classmate of mine wrote the quote, the heart is resilient on hers and I carried that quote with me wherever I went. Even at a young age, I understood the strength of one’s resolve and our ability to overcome all things despite the toughest of circumstances. My resilience stems from my faith and the understanding that no matter what life throws my way, there is something good waiting on the other side if I keep going.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I grew up fiercely dedicated to processes and organization. I remember spending a lot of my free time rearranging my room and making sure everything was in its proper place. This trait carried on to school and eventually the workplace.
My career journey started in Public Relations and Journalism and moved into Communications Strategy before my passion for Management Operations blossomed into becoming an EOS Integrator under the EOS Rocket Fuel Management System, specializing in the optimization of business strategies and leading business development towards the fulfillment of a company’s vision.
I’ve found that I thrive in companies who share my values: integrity, authenticity, and fairness. I feel most fulfilled when working to strike a balance between exceeding client expectations and fostering a culture that allows teams to do their best work.
In all of the positions I’ve held, I have created efficient processes and built organizational structures that are flexible enough to flow through the times but strong enough to withhold and stand different seasons.
I have a keen sense of understanding what leaders need and delivering results before they can think to ask. My goal is always to establish mutual trust and respect between my leaders, myself, and the teams I work with.
My motivation is very intrinsic. I am driven by my own desire to give 100% to everything that I do. Mindfulness is key to my methods, leading to my ability to remain objective, set strong boundaries, and delegate tasks to those best suited for them.
I take the time to truly get to know my team members – what makes them come alive, what makes them hide, what triggers them – and speak with them from that level of understanding. I encourage them to make mistakes and make it clear that we are all learning together. I believe that’s the true beauty of leadership: encouraging everyone to bring their thoughts and ideas (of course in a structured environment!) in order to produce the best work.
I have always been a storyteller at heart, and with time being of the essence, especially in the industries I work for, I ensure that communications are always clear and concise. Full transparency is a double-edged sword, and I work to ensure that it is beneficial for all involved.
I have always been the ‘logical’ ‘process’ driven individual in my last five roles. More often than not, the environments I worked in lacked efficient processes that allowed for sustainable growth so that is where I focused. I always review the lay of the land, find ways to improve, and use these newly installed processes for growth.
I work on the cross section between optimism and realism. Before I jump into providing a strategy, I ensure every factor has been considered, and if it can be accomplished with the resources on hand.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
When it came to work, I have always been the jump in first kind of employee. My greatest skill is understanding that I can figure everything out – no matter what the task, my yes would always come first and I would worry about the details later. I firmly believed that if you say yes, life will support you in getting things done. My advice for those early in their journey would be the same – say yes and believe that you have it within you to accomplish whatever it is that is required of you! Don’t let fear take over – as an old quote would say, feel the fear and do it anyway!
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
As an EOS Integrator under the EOS Rocket Fuel Management system, I take pride in helping small to mid sized business optimize their business strategies and processes towards the fulfillment of a company’s vision. If you are a visionary looking for someone to work hand-in-hand with to turn your vision into effective execution, I would love to get to know you!
