Meet Carlita Pitts

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carlita Pitts. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Carlita, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic is a direct reflection of my mother’s. Growing up in a single-parent household, my mother worked hard to provide for us and ensure we had the best she could offer. She was an entrepreneur, she ran a very successful day-care business out of our home. She ran that business for over 20 years. In addition, she owned a few rental properties and returned to school to get her college degree. She did all of this simultaneously, and I never heard her complain.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Carlita Pitts, a content creator living in Maryland. I’m passionate about travel, wine, beauty, and style. I’ve traveled worldwide to different wine regions. I also love food and enjoy dining out with friends.
My love for exploring wine regions started when I moved to the DC area in 2011. Since then, I’ve visited over 300 wineries across the globe and over 200 in Maryland and Virginia.

As much as I loved visiting the MD and VA wineries, I noticed there wasn’t much diversity in the places I saw, and the marketing materials didn’t feature many people who looked like me. Then, I decided to start documenting my wine travels via social. received excellent feedback and questions from many interested in exploring those regions, which motivated me to visit more places and blog about my travels. Since then, I’ve been featured and quoted in numerous magazine and blog articles and talked about my love for wine travel on podcasts.

After an overwhelming response to my blog and social channels, I launched my content creation and marketing business focused on wine travel. Meeting new friends who run similar businesses and are passionate about wine and wine travel has been one of the best parts of my work.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Confidence, Creativity, and Resilience. Those three qualities/characteristics are the most impactful in my journey.

Being confident in who you are is essential for those just starting in their careers. Confidence is knowing what you’re good at and what you contribute and acting in a way that conveys that to those around you. It is required in every aspect of life – the workplace is not the exception. To become a successful professional, it is pivotal to have confidence.

Creativity is one of the many ways to set yourself apart from others. It helps businesses stay inclusive, fosters an open and inclusive environment, boosts productivity, and leads to innovation and better problem-solving skills. Creativity can also help you gain confidence in your ideas. Additionally, creative thinking allows you to take failures and make them a learning experience rather than a setback.

Resilience is an inner strength, a critical human trait required for peak performance. It’s important because it can help people recover from challenging experiences and assist with growth and development. Resilient people consistently have a positive outlook, deal with each problematic situation quickly, and don’t exhibit excessive negative emotions during difficult times. Resilient individuals are more likely to engage in leadership behaviors. This includes providing creative ideas, problem-solving, or encouraging others to contribute meaningfully.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle I am facing is learning how to balance work and life. My day job and business (content creation and consulting) demand a lot of my time. I am learning to overcome this by setting boundaries, learning to say no, managing my time better, and creating space for the people, places and things that are important to me.
