We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carlos Martinez Leon. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carlos below.
Carlos, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
My journey toward self-confidence discovery was, like that of many, a long and tortuous pilgrimage, a path that led me through valleys of doubt and mountains of self-questioning. For years, I found myself trapped in the seductive snare of trying to mold myself into the image of someone I was not, eagerly trying to resemble others, obsessively studying the masters, attempting to imitate them, and learning everything I could from them, instead of seeking it within myself. It was a process that took years to unravel, years during which I faced the paralyzing fear of not being enough. Yet, life had ways of inviting me to seek authenticity in myself, even when it meant taking unknown paths in the realm of painting.
The transformation truly began when I started to look inward, to appreciate the stories woven into the fabric of my own life. I began to see that my experiences, no matter how mundane or insignificant they might seem to external eyes, were profoundly valuable. They were the unique brushstrokes that gave color and shape to the artwork I could create. It was in the acceptance of my own story, in the valuation of my experiences and the uniqueness of my being, where confidence began to germinate.
As I became more interesting to myself, as I began to appreciate my own experiences and see them as sources of strength and wisdom, my confidence blossomed. I understood that being true to oneself is not an act of indulgence, but of courage. Every lived experience, every failure and every triumph, every painting made, every loose sketch, every portrait, has shaped me into who I am. This recognition not only fueled my confidence but also transformed my art, allowing me to create with renewed authenticity and passion, and the discovery of The Essential.
This journey towards self-acceptance and confidence is a constant reminder that our greatest masterpiece is, in fact, our own life. By fully embracing who we are, by valuing our own stories and experiences, we give ourselves permission to shine with our own light and offer the world something truly unique. This is the foundation of all genuine confidence: knowing that, in the essence of our being, we are already everything we need to be.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Carlos Martínez León, an artist whose work seeks to connect directly with the soul, hailing from Maracaibo, Venezuela, with a formative journey in Florence, Italy. My art is not just about refining techniques but questioning what it means to be an artist today. Returning to America, I brought a new vision, challenging traditional paradigms by blending representation and abstraction to explore the human spirit. My excitement lies in creating art that fosters deep connections and conversations about our shared humanity.
Currently, I’m excited about “The Essential” series, aimed at exploring my philosophy of art. This work will be part of an exhibition designed to engage and provoke deep reflection. Additionally, as the co-founder and creative director of MIFA, I’m involved in launching programs that bridge traditional and contemporary art education, supporting emerging artists. My brand and art are for those seeking to explore beyond the aesthetic, into the soulful dialogues and transcendent connections that art can offer.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
In my artistic journey, I would highlight the importance of technical understanding, art history, and the ability to critique constructively as foundational pillars. Mastery of techniques is crucial for intentionally exploring and breaking norms, while knowledge of art history enriches our perspective, teaching us the value of context and artistic evolution. The skill to constructively evaluate both our work and that of others fosters invaluable growth.
For those starting out in art, focusing on these three aspects—learning with patience and practicing with passion—can provide a solid foundation on which to innovate and express their unique vision. Formal education in art is a starting point that facilitates creative freedom, allowing us to materialize our vision in the art world with a robust foundation and a spirit open to constant evolution.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was giving me the confidence to pursue the path of art, at a time when the conventional choice was to aim for careers in engineering or medicine. They always believed in me, providing unwavering support even during moments when I contemplated giving up. This faith they had in my artistic journey not only emboldened me to follow my passion but also instilled in me the resilience to face the challenges that come with a career in the arts. Their belief in my potential was a beacon of encouragement, guiding me through periods of doubt and reinforcing my commitment to my craft.
