Meet Carly Plemons

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Carly Plemons. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Carly below.

Carly, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
As cliche as it may sound, my parents. My parents divorced when I was 3, and I saw firsthand the hardships that single parents face. For me, that looked like never seeing my parents not working. We would be on a trip to visit family in another state, where my mom would be working on her degree online on her laptop at my uncle’s kitchen table. Everyone else was outside enjoying the weather, the kids were playing on the swingset, and my mom was clicking away. My dad would take my sister and me to school, and then head to work. Every day for him consisted of two jobs and managing two young kids. After one job, he was straight to a second shift at another, bringing food home from his job for dinner.

My parents weren’t the workaholic types like you’d see in the movies where the dad went to work at some law firm, the mom went to some office, and the kids were with some nanny. Although I admire anyone who would work to provide for their family, this wasn’t like the movies. There was a lot more struggle and frustration in between the drive and the leadership. My parents worked every second they could, so we could afford to live. It was a matter of being able to put food on the table each night, and providing enough money for lunches at school the next day.

Raising two little kids alone, but separately to make ends meet was a struggle I unfortunately had to see two people I love dearly have. I saw sacrifice, drive, and love. Seeing the people you care about do everything they can to make ends meet and provide for their families is what drives me to do the same.

My creativity stems from seeing their determination. They worked hard to each get Master’s degrees, and work in the fields they set their minds to. Sometimes you have to juggle a few things to work your way into the career you want and it’s not always the path you’d expect. As long as your heart’s in it, what you want will align.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a multifaceted freelancer. I’m a writer, content creator, and digital marketer. I have a love (and addiction) to social media and was able to make a career out of where my heart was. I market brands from BravoTV shows to Scrabble on social media. Anywhere that I can lend my expertise and showcase brands I love in a digestible way on social media is my forte. I’ve marketed start-up beauty brands, securing ad placements in Vogue. I’ve also strategized content for high-budget large-scale campaigns for household brands like Yahtzee and Scrabble. I’ve even spent time in the healthcare space writing and publishing through an SEO lens. I’ve gained a lot of experience by simply saying “yes!” to opportunities out of my comfort zone and learning many lifelong skills along the way. I’m always looking to take new clients to an elevated level, connect with me by reaching out to my email: contact.lovesickmedia@gmail.com

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Know your worth and advocate for what your needs are. Just because you are new to an industry, doesn’t mean you work for free. Your time and strengths are valuable. Advocate for yourself, even when it seems scary!

2. Learn how to market yourself. Even if you are new to an industry, you don’t have to wait to get hired to get your first step in the door. Create mock campaigns or projects that you can showcase in your portfolio.

3. Stay true to your values. An opportunity might seem super exciting, but if it’s not something you are genuinely passionate about, how can you convince others to care about it?

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking for new clients to market and collaborate with. If you are in the entertainment, beauty, and wellness spaces, we’ll be a match! Brands who are looking to scale their visibility through social media, create a sense of community among followers, or grow into new and innovative spaces, let’s connect!
