Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Carmella Alexander. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Carmella, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
As a parent of a child with ongoing disabilities, its hard not to let life challenges engulf you into feelings of sorrow. As a parent who doesn’t want their child to suffer or be in pain, these feelings gave me so much heartache. I had to find an outlet to release the snare of pitying myself and my situation. You may wonder how I was able to do that. You see, I’ve always had a love of writing since I was about eight years of age. I enjoyed writing short stories and poems to occupy my time. However, growing up and becoming an adult I let that robust flame die out. My interest wasn’t rekindled until I had my son Amir. He got me thinking, The world needs a story about him! Each year, Amir continues to defy the grim odds against him. He overcomes like a superhero! Then Bingo! I would write stories that characterize him as a hero! I found my purpose and that was to give those who don’t have a voice, a voice through my stories. I would give those with a limitation, strength! So I believe I have found my purpose and that was to become an author.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As a children’s book Author, I feel elated that I’ve had the opportunity to share my gift so that others can recognize the strength and the resilience of children with disabilities as well. They deserve positive representation and I strive to give that to them through my stories! Since writing, I’ve had the pleasure to be featured on local magazines, two billboards one in Atlanta and Texas and finally a radio station in Brazil! I am determined to get my sons story out there!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I had the pleasure of speaking with other authors about their journey, and I have benefited from their advice on different things since starting out. It’s important for me as a business owner ,artist, etc, to reach out to like-minded individuals who have the experience and knowledge to help you along the way.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My mother is my biggest cheerleader! She supports me in everything that I do. She encourages me to reach beyond what is normal to strive for better. My mother’s impressive work ethics rubbed off on me, I believe. I do not give up easily. She has always advised me to have a plan AB& C. She believed in going down the whole alphabet until you accomplish the things you set out to do. She is my world and I couldn’t have traveled this journey alone without her!
