Meet Carrie Hoffman

We were lucky to catch up with Carrie Hoffman recently and have shared our conversation below.

Carrie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
In my experience I just had to overcome imposter syndrome by continuing to teach and guide retreats even when I felt like an imposter. Over the years of doing it the feeling eventually faded. I have confidence in my teaching now but I am still always seeking to learn!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I run Bigger Life Adventures, a retreat company offering yoga and adventure experiences in Arizona and around the world! We focus a lot on authentic yoga philosophy, getting “out of our comfort zones” with new adventures, community, and recovery. My partner and I are both in long term recovery from addiction and super proud of it. So on our retreats we try to share what has helped us on our path – yoga, nature, meditation, and like-minded community!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
As an entrepreneur I think being bold enough to just start something is a huge step. I’m proud that my partner and I have never been too afraid to try something new and to dream big! We started with small yoga retreats in the southwest and now we get to take people all over the world as well!

As a yoga teacher, I believe having awareness and training in trauma-sensitive yoga is vital, no matter where you teach. The practice can be healing but it can also be triggering. So learning about the nervous system, healing modalities, and doing my own healing work has been critical.

I am also always seeking to learn more about nature, ecology, and the indigenous history of the places where we travel.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal student is someone who is seeking to live a more connected, holistic life and also wants to give back to others. People healing from addiction, trauma, or any other life issue often find our retreats valuable. We are all recovering from something, even if it’s just stress! By healing ourselves we truly can help heal the world.
