We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cassidy Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cassidy, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
For me, it’s always been important to have hobbies. Being an independent musician can mean that you’re doing everything, from marketing to creating album art to writing the music. And even though you love it, your whole life starts to revolve around it and you start to identify so closely with your passion. I find sometimes I burnout without even realizing it. But something that really helps me avoid getting to that point is having somewhere else to put my energy. Especially as a workaholic, it’s important to me that I step away from the music to do other things I love like cooking, running or drawing. It helps me see the bigger picture and enjoy life more.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Cassidy Taylor! I’m an independent musical artist from Haliburton, ON Canada. Songwriting is where it all started for me. I have been writing melodies and lyrics ever since I can remember being alive and it’s still my favourite thing to do today. I released my debut self-titled EP in July of 2023. Right now, I’m working towards bringing my next project to life in the studio and I’m really excited for people to hear it someday.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Willpower, kindness, and patience.
Being able to get things done even when I didn’t want to, was imperative. To turn your hobby into your job means there are going to be aspects you dislike. Having the willpower to do it anyways, will set you apart from being just a hobbyists to owning a business.
I find kindness is often overlooked, but being a nice person goes a long way. Personally, I’d much rather work with a kind songwriter who’s just starting out than someone who’s won a grammy but treats people like trash. Your supporters and the people you collaborate with are going to push you along in your journey more than you realize. And if you burn bridges, it’s going to come back to bite you.
For me, it was difficult to understand at first that this was a long-game. Success wasn’t going to happen overnight. In this, I also found the importance of self-care and avoiding burnout. Doing small tasks everyday to create slow progress will get you much farther than doing a million things in 24 hours just to have to take time off because you’ve become exhausted and unmotivated.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, and it happens often, talking about it is the first thing I do. Just speaking the words to someone releases tension and sometimes even helps me understand WHY I might be overwhelmed and how to move forward. The second thing I do is make sure to stay kind to myself. I give myself space and allow myself some time to feel those emotions before trying to dissect them. Bottling feelings up has never worked out well for me and I often end up burnt out. Getting comfortable with talking about how I feel was really important for me.
