Meet Catalina Parker

We were lucky to catch up with Catalina Parker recently and have shared our conversation below.

Catalina, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
My self-discipline stems from my time as a competitive skier. During training sessions and race events, my coaches would record my runs on video and we would review the footage together. This process involved analyzing everything from my body movements to my energy levels. After critiquing my performance, I would correct any mistakes I had made during my next run. This exercise where I continuously improve myself has stuck with me to this day.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My business partner and I got into nonprofit work straight out of college. Initially, it was fulfilling, but eventually, we found ourselves overwhelmed, overworked, and struggling in our personal lives. Realizing this, we quit and decided to start fresh. Same skills, same sector, but this time on our terms. We decided to build a consulting business where we could charge for our value and our expertise, instead of just our time and energy. Fast forward two years and our nonprofit consulting business has become our full-time career. We are grateful, and so in love with our lives today, that we wanted to find a way to share our journey with others experiencing similar challenges. That’s why we decided to start coaching entrepreneurs this year. We empower women nonprofit leaders who want to maximize their wealth, freedom, and results through their own consulting business.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
People with big hearts are often drawn to nonprofit work, but unfortunately, employers can take advantage of this passion. As a result, your personal identity and self-worth can become intertwined with your organization’s mission. It was only after stepping away from my day-to-day life as a nonprofit employee that I truly realized this. Therefore, I want to encourage those in a similar position to prioritize self-care, recognize their worth, and not hesitate to make a change when necessary. Consulting for nonprofits is a great alternative.
