Meet Cathy Fyock

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cathy Fyock. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Cathy, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
My first book was under contract, yet I couldn’t get started writing (and I’m normally a go-getter type person). During this same time I was experiencing a recurring nightmare: I was standing in a boardroom in front of a group of executives, and when I looked down I realized I was naked! Egads. What did that mean? I had no idea, until I was on a business trip and in the seat pocket in front of me was a magazine featuring a lead article on the dreams of executive women. I searched for my dream, and there it was, the number one dream! But what did it mean? Executive women, when promoted, often experience imposter symdrome: “someone is going to find out that I’m not qualified for this position. I’m going to be exposed::.” in considering this explanation, I thought, “I’m not a recently promoted woman. In fact, I’m self-employed and working on my book.” And then it hit me: I was “exposing” my knowledge–or lack of knowledge–on this topic! The exact thought was that “I was documenting for the world my level of incompetence.” By simply stating and facing my fear of being revealed as an imposter I was able to move forward and complete my first book.

Note: As the author of 12 books, I continue to face this fear each and every time I sit down to write. And as a book coach, I can acknowledge that the fear doesn’t go away. You write and more forward in the face of this fear.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have the most exciting and fulfilling job in the world! As a book coach, I am helping my clients–professionals and thought leaders–further develop their brand and expand their influence by authoring a nonfiction book. I truly believe that authors can change the world, one word at a time, and that I am a vital part f that process.

Many brilliant individuals are held back by imposter syndrome, and find it difficult to document their thought leadership. I give them the process for writing, and the confidence in their abilities through my unique coaching system. I am their cheerleader, strategic business partner, and trusted advisor. And I am often developing life-long friendships in the process.

I plan to continue in my work as long as I live!

This past year I published my 12th book with my colleague and friend Allie Pleiter, titled Writer Crisis Hotline. We are currently working on the audio book which will be available later in 2024.

I am also revising my Speaker Author Mastermind program, a year-long membership program for those who are published or nearing publication, who want to be in community with those who want to leverage their books for business growth. We support one another’s book launches, and share ideas for continually promoting our books as part of our business marketing strategy with an “everyday is launch day mentality.”

I continue to support my clients through one-on-one coaching packages, group coaching, VIP writing experiences, and virtual and in-person writing retreats. I enjoy offering workshops and learning programs to give those who think they can’t write (or those who don’t like to write) the skills and confidence to write quickly and effectively.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Understand the importance of connection and community. This means that we can’t go it alone. We need each other. We were created to be in community and to serve one another. Where do I need to ask for help or gain the support of others? How can I be of service? How can I connect people in need to resources?

Possessing a sense of urgency for moving forward and accomplishing goals. This is about focusing on results, not busyness. What is it that will move my agenda forward in a meaningful way? What can I do today vs. tomorrow?

Having a stratetgc mindset for prioritizing and creating goals. This is about focusing on the big WHY. What is my highest purpose? What is my reason for being? What is the best sequence for moving forward in the right direction?

For those early in their journey, I believe in mentorship. coaching, and Masterminds. We can’t do it alone, so who can we connect with, as a mentor, coach, or colleagues, who can support our journey and give us valuable feedback and insights?

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I love to work with entrepreneurs and solopreneurs who want to establish their credibility and visibility by expanding their thought leadership through writing. My ideal client has an area of expertise, or insights through experience, that they want to share with others. They are likely excellent communicators but not necessarily good writers (or don’t have faith in their writing abilities). They would rather be working in their area of expertise or speaking vs. writing. They are driven, and are service-minded. They believe that their ideas can make the world a better place.

My ideal client is a very busy person who likely doesn’t think they have time to write, so want to be able to achieve this goal quickly in spite of time restrictions. They have a sense of urgency and want to get this book written so they can expand their ideas.

My ideal client often has a vision of these things, but doesn’t always think big enough about what they can do with their idea. I love to help my clients think bigger and more expansively about what is possible.
