Chamcee , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Navigating spaces where you’re the only one who looks like you can present unique challenges, but it’s also an opportunity to showcase your resilience and leadership. As a successful 29-year-old Black man, here are some insights on how I’ve learned to be effective in such situations:
1. Confidence and Authenticity: Embracing my authentic self and being confident in my abilities has been crucial. It’s important not to feel the need to conform but rather to bring your unique perspective to the table.
2. Building Relationships: Actively engaging with others in the room and building meaningful relationships has helped me establish a sense of belonging. Connecting on a personal level can break down barriers and create a more inclusive environment.
3. Continuous Learning: Staying informed and continuously improving my skills has been instrumental. This not only enhances my professional capabilities but also challenges stereotypes and showcases the diversity of talents within the community.
4. Mentorship and Networking: Seeking mentorship and networking with individuals who have faced similar challenges has provided valuable guidance. Learning from others who have successfully navigated similar situations can be empowering.
5. Advocacy: Advocating for diversity and inclusion within the workplace is essential. Being vocal about the importance of diverse perspectives and contributions can contribute to a more inclusive environment for everyone.
6. Resilience: Recognizing that challenges may arise and being resilient in the face of adversity is key. Learning from setbacks and using them as opportunities for growth has been an integral part of my journey.

As a Black artist, I recognize the importance of representation and the impact it can have on shaping self-perception. In a society that often imposes narrow standards, I aim to broaden the spectrum of beauty and self-worth through my work. My lens becomes a mirror reflecting the strength, resilience, and grace inherent in self identity. The visual journey I offer is not just about aesthetics; it is an exploration of the soul, a mirror that encourages self-reflection and self-discovery.
In the realm of videography, I extend the narrative, capturing the dynamic essence of each individual’s journey towards self-love. Reflecting on my journey as a 12-year-old photographer who achieved success at a high level, there were three key qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that had a significant impact:
1. Passion and Dedication:
My passion for photography was the driving force behind my success. The genuine love for capturing moments and telling stories through my lens kept me motivated even during challenging times. Dedication to honing my skills, practicing consistently, and pushing the boundaries of my creativity played a crucial role in reaching new heights.
Advice: For those early in their journey, I recommend cultivating a deep passion for the art of photography. Let your love for capturing moments guide your learning and practice. Dedicate time to improve your skills regularly, experiment with different styles, and don’t be afraid to take risks in pursuit of your artistic vision.
2. Continuous Learning and Adaptability:
In the dynamic field of photography, staying updated with the latest techniques, technology, and trends is essential. Embracing a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability allowed me to evolve with the industry. One of the most impactful nuggets of wisdom from the book is the importance of interpersonal skills. Carnegie emphasizes the power of genuine and sincere interactions with people. As a photographer, building strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and subjects is crucial.
