Meet Chelsea Husum

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chelsea Husum. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Chelsea, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
We will experience adversity throughout our lives, and that is the one thing that is guaranteed as we go through the human experience. I have personally overcome substantial adversity throughout my life. It is so hard when you are going through it and at the time, you feel as if that situation will break you. But I have gone through enough to this point in my life that I have learned that I need to take care of myself and my mental and physical health, and then whatever obstacle you’re dealing with, is a lot easier to move through if you are taking care of yourself. I have learned that I can overcome whatever is thrown at me, because I’ve perservered through the tough times and come out each time, stronger and more resilient than ever. I have learned true resilience from enduring trauma and tough times throughout my personal life and those times have forced me to grow into a stronger version of myself. And I wouldn’t change any of it. I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t gone through such adversity.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I own and operate a small construction company in Denver, CO, am an author and speaker. My first book is called “Real Vibes Only: Unapologetic Confessions of a Hot Mess Mom-preneur” and am so excited that is available on Amazon! Through my book, I hope to inspire other women to feel comfortable and safe enough to share their own stories and step into their authentic selves. I hope to inspire others going through adversity and life challenges that no matter how hard and heavy it feels at the time, you WILL make it through and you WILL come out so much stronger on the other side. Nothing can truly break us, even though it might feel like it in that moment, but we will rise and make it through and can use our strength and stories to go out and inspire others in the world. I also hope to inspire busy women, entrepreneurs and moms to be vulnerable, real and raw, and know we can work to build our dream like without shame and we can find a supportive community of like-minded women, and we can all shine and thrive together.

Through my company, speaking and sharing about my book, I hope to inspire others to chase their dreams and that they can overcome anything that life throws at them!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three things that were so important for my journey were: boundaries, self care and surrounding myself with other successful driven people.

Boundaries are so necesary in our busy lives today. We have so many things to do each day that we truly have to protect our time and fill it with things that fill us up and bring us joy. We also need to quit feeling like we need to say yes to every offer for a meeting, coffee or event. If you are asked to attend something or spend time doing something, and it doesn’t move the needle forward on your business, or make your soul say an emphatic “yes!”, then you can kindly say “no thank you” and move on. Fill your days with your priorities and do not fall into the people pleasing mentality. Your life is what you make it so make sure you’re spending your valuable time on things you love and that enhance your life and business.

Self care is so incredibly important! Especially for busy moms, women and entrepreneurs. Society has this stigma that if you are a woman and you take time for self care, you are selfish. That is absolutely not true, and self care is absolutely essential to thriving and performing at your top level. Move your body however you can that makes you happy. Fill your body with nutritious food that will give you energy and not bog you down. If you find alcohol is a problem for you and wreaking havoc on your other healthy habits, then kick it to the curb! Get outside in the sunshine. Surround yourself with friends and family who truly support and love you. Get enough sleep each night and make sure you are hydrated. It is so important to have healthy habits in your life that make you feel your best, so that you can go out and truly shine!

Who are you surrounding yourself with? Are you around people who are sharing their opinions (that you never asked for) and who are trying to bring you down or make you question your goals? Or are you surrounding yourself with other driven, positive people who are out achieving amazing things and are dreamers? If your inner circle of family or friends are bringing you down, questioning your choices, or constantly throwing negativity at you, it’s time to find a new tribe. It is so imperative to find like-minded ambitious people who will support you and build you up and help energize you. We need to be throughtful about who we are spending our time with, because it truly will affect you and your energy.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I have a lot going on in my life. Between running a company and doing everything myself, speaking, being a guest on sometimes multiple podcasts a day, being a mom to two young boys, being a wife, being involved in numerous organizations, on the Board of Directors for other organizations, being a friend, daughter, etc., I can easily feel overwhelmed. There are so many things that demand my attention and energy. When I find myself feeling overwhelmed and have a really busy week ahead of me, I try to change my focus. Instead of looking at the large amount of meetings, calls, appointments, etc. that I have for the entire week, I change my focus to each day. I focus on attacking each day and put my energy into that, so I don’t get overwhelmed by the entire week. Then I make it through each day and it changes it into a more bite sized focus. I also look at my schedule and see if I filled it that week with any unnecessary things that I can take out. Many times, we have filled the week with things that we really don’t need to do or want to do, and that can help your energy and mindset when you have a crazy schedule. I also make sure to head to the gym first thing in the morning to move my body. That helps set each day up for success and gives me a more positive outlook and more energy throughout the day, which helps me feel less overwhelmed overall.
