Meet Chia-Ming Ro

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Chia-Ming Ro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Chia-Ming, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
My educational and (first) career background is in accounting and finance, where most did not look like me in the board rooms. I had to build confidence and recognize that I have unique skills and experiences to bring to the table, especially because I was different. I listened more than I spoke to understand different perspectives and build stronger relationships. Then when I did speak up, I was supported by the strong relationships I built.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an edible garden designer and content creator with a love for growing edible plants and flowers, especially roses and dahlias. My own experience with urban homesteading inspired me to start Coastal Homestead, where I design gardens that are both beautiful and functional, providing nourishment and beauty to clients ranging from commercial to residential properties. My work has been recognized and selected for various prestigious projects, including designing the potager of the 2023 Pasadena Showcase House. This is an exciting opportunity for me to showcase my skills and creativity to a wider audience. I aspire to design a production garden for a restaurant one day, where I can help create a sustainable food system that provides fresh, healthy, and locally sourced food to the community.

Beyond my professional work, I’m an avid gardener and homesteader. I keep chickens and cultivate food and flowers in both my front and back yard. My commitment to sustainability is evident in all aspects of my life, and I love to share my passion for gardening and homesteading with others.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Networking, education and work experience in accounting/finance, and love for learning have been crucial to my success as an entrepreneur. By networking, I have built valuable relationships and gained the support and knowledge needed to grow my business. My education and work experience have given me the financial literacy and skills required to manage and make sound decisions for my business. My love for learning has allowed me to adapt and stay innovative in a changing industry. To improve in these areas, my advice would be to attend industry events, join professional organizations, seek mentorship, and stay informed of emerging trends and technologies in your industry. Also invest in your continuing education and stay curious.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client for a turnkey edible garden is a homeowner or business owner who values sustainability, healthy living, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces. They may have a passion for cooking or gardening and are interested in growing fresh, organic produce in a limited space. As an edible garden designer, I can create a custom garden design that is tailored to their needs and preferences. My ideal client is willing to invest in a quality garden design and is looking for a trusted professional to guide them through the process.
