We were lucky to catch up with Chris McClellan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Chris, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I think we become more resilient with experience. We can see that through each trial or obstacle, we grow and learn what we value. The more I come to know myself, the more I trust myself. I spend less time on what’s not important to me, and focus more on what is. I enjoy more of life, and I can better appreciate the experiences I’ve had that make me who I am today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I grew up in a small New England town and grew professionally in Boston, New York and now, in LA county. I enjoy sharing experiences and stories. My day to day role is typically a creative strategist, a change leader and a partner in development. I’m a leader reluctantly at times. I invest in my team passionately and I highly value creative collaboration. My current role is so much fun! We’re creating a culture of leadership in the leading performing sales division of a very unique Fortune 100 company. I’m humbled and so thrilled for the opportunity to be a part,
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As I look back, I see that having determination – a firmness of purpose – is critical to continue forward. I remained willing to learn and keep going. Most impactful is the quality of humility, being honest and true to both my assets as well as my defaults in character. The key to any peace and joy I find in my work is through humility. Sometimes it’s harder to own the responsibility of our assets than it is our weaknesses. When I am honest about obstacles and openminded enough to learn about something new about myself yourself, I can take consistent action to enjoy miracles in my life.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents both gave me a lot, and they did their jobs well. My mom has a deep faith she has shared with me. Both of my parents encouraged my independence and an exploration of faith and education from the study of dancing to university. My father was an entrepreneur and incredible communicator, he connected to the hearts and minds of most people he met even casually. I pursued both of those passions – I studied communications, and couldn’t wait to start my own business. I always enjoyed the autonomy of work. He was a storyteller who showed me how our stories can heal the heart and cure the bitter illusion of separation. I’m so grateful for the massive impact of each of my parents, and my extended family as well.
