Meet Christine Deaton

We were lucky to catch up with Christine Deaton recently and have shared our conversation below.

Christine, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
As a creative entrepreneur, and more specifically a photographer, confidence can ebb and flow as you develop your skill and build your business. I think at the end of the day confidence comes from knowing that deep within you there is desire, hope, and potential. We are all always evolving as artists and to be confident is to know that you have something to offer. Confidence is closely woven with our self-esteem too. It’s often hard to find confidence if your self-esteem is low. For me personally, my self-esteem is rooted in knowing I have value, that I am loved, and that I have a safe space to be creative. These critical components to positive self-esteem were gifted to me throughout my life by those who love me, so as an adult I am able to have positive self-esteem for myself. Knowing my inherit worth and value allows me to be an artist with confidence. If someone wants to be an artist and finds that confidence or self-esteem are lacking, then I would encourage them to find other artists who are like-minded, welcoming, and encouraging. They can help remind you that you have something amazing to offer the world!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m a luxury photographer with a heart for capturing all of life’s fleeting moments- specializing in love-soaked editorial portraits of maternity, newborn, and family.

Known for finding the perfect balance between lifestyle and editorial photos, I am now sharing my photography practices with other photographers looking to achieve a new level of excellence in their photography business. A passion for community, vulnerability, and motherhood have brought all of my talents together to creating the perfect opportunity to pour my heart into my photography students.

When I’m not photographing or teaching, you can find me baking with my kids, dancing while folding laundry, and singing in the car (at full volume!).

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful things I learned at the beginning of my photography journey were:

1. Lighting and Camera Settings- if you don’t get it right in camera to start, then the post processing work is challenging or impossible. Light is everything in photography and I’m still learning every day.

2. Practice, Practice, Practice- like most things in life, the amount of work we put in is directly reflected in the results we get out. The more I photograph, style, pose, and edit, the more proud I am of the work I am creating!

3. Collaborate & Network- working with other creatives (photographers and other creatives alike) has brought so much joy and inspiration to my work. Being a creative entrepreneur can get lonely, but creating community is incredibly fulfilling. The more I work with others, the better I get at my specific craft.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
I remember a time when I hoped that my business would grow to serve at least 4 clients a month. Today, I serve 4 clients a week and my calendar is so full that I have to turn inquiries away to other photographers. Sometimes we are plugging along in business and just doing the work that we don’t see how far we’ve come until we come up for a little air.

This last year I did just that. I came up for air and saw how far I’d come. I wanted to share my secrets with other photographers who were looking for similar results. At the start of 2023 I decided to create an online education course for other photographers who want to achieve the same results they saw me enjoying.

My Presets & Editing Course (https://christinedeatoncreative.com/course) was launched in May of 2023 and the biggest lesson I learned in the process of creating, and launching the course was all about enjoying the journey. I wanted to get this content out to other photographers quickly, but I found that the time I spent interviewing photographers about the content they wanted in an editing course was priceless. Then came the course launch, and checking in with my students. Their feedback about the way the course has completely changed their work and their business still gets me choked up with pride. Create an online course is no small endeavor. I thought that “just getting the course into the world” would be the accomplishment, when in reality the accomplishment is the way I’ve personally grown in the process of creating the course and the way I feel when I get to continue nurturing my student community.
