We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christine Nightingale a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christine, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I faced a tough challenge in developing self-confidence and self-esteem as a shy middle child amongst two strong personalities. However, living abroad in different countries played a significant role in shaping my personality. During my teenage years, I lived in the US, where I celebrated my differences and uniqueness, which helped me develop my confidence. Later, in my early twenties, my move to Brazil, learning a new language, and experiencing a new environment, further strengthened my confidence. My self-esteem journey was more of a spiritual quest, where I connected with myself, my faith, and God. Today, in my late 30s, I actively study astrology, numerology, and the gene keys, and regularly attend therapy sessions to understand myself better. I am now comfortable with who I am, and I confidently show up as my true self, with all my strengths and weaknesses.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Christine Nightingale, a Chilean figurative meta-realist artist located in South Florida. I’ve been painting since my early childhood and started to create professionally in my 30s. I went to Design School in Brazil but painting and art have always been my true passion because I come from a family of artists. I create beautiful art pieces that have my unique style and perspective of the world. I’m proud of my origins and the work I have created by being a self-taught artist. I create emotional and thought-provoking pieces that are visually striking. My art leads the viewer towards awareness of self and their surroundings by exploring themes of connection between humans, nature, and our higher self. Most of my pieces are oils and acrylics on canvas, and I also have prints available. I’m also exploring the world of painting murals. I put the intention to heal and bring beauty through my art and cause curiosity, making the viewer wonder beyond what they perceive as reality. The world needs more magic and I want to bring this experience through what inspires me: connection.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The most crucial quality for me is persistence because, as an artist, it is essential to be able to persevere against all odds. Society and the system are not designed in our favor, so the persistence of believing in yourself is what will bring you forward. Being in design school helped me a lot in creating and selling my art, understanding concepts of design from problem-solving, and how to create a brand, and marketing classes, to basic composition and color “rules.” Another skill that helps me as an artist is my sensitivity toward others, being an empath. When I paint to illustrate something personal, it also touches others’ feelings because I can easily perceive what makes people feel in a certain way. I think we all have different qualities, and the important part is to discover which ones are yours. To know yourself and what you are good at and invest your time and energy on that. Or, if there’s something more difficult for you but you believe it to be important, also put the right mindset and work into it. Most skills come with dedication!and energy on that. Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Currently it feels challenging to find places to show my work, places that really want to partner up and that value art. Galleries around seem to only want money up front. It’s hard to create and represent and sell your own work.
