We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christopher Massey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christopher , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I graduated from Renaissance High School in Detroit in 2004. I barely graduated lol (1.5 GPA) Not because I was incapable of doing the work, didn’t apply myself. My parents had connections at Dillard University in New Orleans. They sent me there without my input. I viewed this as an opportunity for a fresh start. I applied myself and averaged a 3.8 GPA Freshman year. I came back for sophomore year, August 2005, the year Hurricane Katrina occurred. During the evacuation, I went to a city outside of Jackson, MS to stay with one of my mother’s friends during the storm. Although we were safe, we still experienced a power outage. When the storm was over, I woke up to a feeling of peace and calm I’d never experienced. While in my room, my inner voice said “You have a Purpose to fulfill in this lifetime. Are you willing to fully trust God to guide you on this journey?” I said yes. I wrote a statement in one sentence, signed the paper. That was the beginning of my Spiritual journey. I’ve been walking in my Purpose on purpose since I was 19.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
LGNDRĒ was created to acknowledge, inspire and celebrate individuals whom desire to share their innate talents that contribute to the overall well-being of their communities and beyond. One of our main goals is to create mutually beneficial relationships by connecting Visionaries, Innovators, and Open- Minded individuals that realize they have infinite potential for greatness via Apparel & Experiences. In addition to the LGNDRĒ motto (Believers become Innovators. Innovators become Legendary.), we also believe that no matter how subtle or extravagant your contributions are, YOU can be Legendary in your own right. I moved back to Detroit in 2006 after leaving Howard University on a Hurricane Katrina Grant to become an Entrepreneur. I began my Podcast Career in 2008. It wasn’t called Podcasting at the time, it was referred to as Internet Radio. The first ever Chris Massey Show debuted December 1st, 2008 via SoundOfSoulRadio.com. My Podcast was created as a platform to bring more opportunities, resources and awareness to a variety of Innovators from Detroit, Michigan and beyond. Since 2008, I have Hosted as well as Produced Interview segments that feature a diverse group of Innovators and Great Personalities to share their stories via conversations that are authentic, inspirational, as well as entertaining. New Interviews are currently available on SHAREZO.com (Hidden Gems: People You Need To Know & Why). Past Interviews are currently available via Apple Podcast and SoundCloud.com/chrismasseyshow
The 15-Year Anniversary of my Podcast Career will be on December 1, 2023.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Faith, vision and integrity. Faith has allowed me to stay committed to my vision, which leads to consistency and forward movement. Integrity has allowed me to consistently acquire and expand my network as a result of my character. My advice is to always KNOW YOUR WHY!!! Learn what it takes to succeed in your chose field and be willing to do whatever it takes to be successful without compromising/sacrificing your morals/integrity.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I Love to read. “Warrior of the Light” by Paulo Coelho has helped me significantly. It focuses on how to stay focused and/or how to refocus if/when you encounter adversity and/or make mistakes on your journey. It shows individuals how to adapt to various circumstances and embrace life, accept temporary defeat if necessary. It teaches forgiveness for yourself and others. As long as you don’t quit, you’ll emerge victoriously.
