We recently connected with Chrystal Dawn and have shared our conversation below.
Chrystal, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Resilience, for me, is all about mindset. Every person has setbacks and hard times, some more than others. It’s what we choose to do in those moments that make or break us.
Life is what we make it and excuses only get us so far. You can be a victim or a victor, and it’s all your choice.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve been working hard the last few years to get my work out there. I have a story to tell and I love being able to share it with others. The best feeling is experiencing someone else feel a connection with something I’ve created. When something just clicks on for them while they’re looking at a piece.
Art is about connecting and sharing a feeling or an idea. One of the main things I try to convey with my work is our connection to nature and each other. I paint wildlife in a way that asks the viewer to see them as more than just an animal. At our core, all of us come from the same place. I want people to feel that connection.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Hard work and accountability. I have to hold myself accountable every day, and that can be hard to do. My success is on my shoulders and I can’t expect it to come from anywhere else. It’s more than a full time job.
If you’re feeling uninspired, go to galleries. Watch an inspiring film. Join an artist group. Bounce ideas around with other creatives. Have the “I am an artist” mindset. Shut down imposter syndrome and know your creative worth.
Art is a difficult career and my biggest advice is to not give up. If you’re turned down for a show, or receive a harsh critique, take note. Don’t allow it to crush your spirit or put doubt into your head. See why you were turned down, and where you can improve. Use every rejection as a stepping stone to learn and get better. Constantly strive to be better and find your creative voice.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Working with other creatives can be such an amazing experience! Every artist thinks and creates differently, and we can always learn something new from each other. I am always looking for new people to collaborate with.
