Meet Clovis Kabongo

We recently connected with Clovis Kabongo and have shared our conversation below.

Clovis, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my ambition and passion for what I do. Storytelling means the world to me and working to effectively secure and maintain a place in the entertainment field is what has allowed me to have consistency in my work ethic.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Black Petal Theatre aims to tell stories of people of color/minorities that disrupt unflattering stereotypes and instead place us in elevated narratives. I write the plays, prepare the productions, and assemble the team of actors and crew members who help bring the story to life.

One of the most exciting things about what I do is being able to create and transfer stories from my head to paper, and then bring said stories to life inside the rehearsal room alongside other creatives. The overall collaborative experience of what I do is so incredibly special. Bringing people from all over together and creating community is definitely one of the most rewarding parts.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Dedication, consistency, and resilience. These three key elements will have such a rich impact on anyone’s journey — but especially those looking to enter a competitive field such as theatre. Honing these skills and forming your artistry around them will indubitably breed great results.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Black Petal is always looking for partners and creative collaborators! We’ve showcased a bevy of artists from poets, musicians, painters, actors, dancers, and more! We also understand that the stage isn’t just where the magic happens, but also behind the scenes. Which is why we aim to also create spaces for lighting designers, stage managers, and set and costume designers. We take pride in providing a platform for artists to thrive in their respective areas and welcome all to contact us through our social media and/or website.
