We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Comfort Nyeswah-Wiafe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Comfort, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My purpose found me when I was in high school. My early experiences and surroundings at the time shaped how I wanted to help shift my community. Some people in high school usually choose between a few options of what they want to do or (Be) and then begin the process. Me on the other hand, I knew what I wanted to do and who I wanted to Be. I just didn’t know in the 9th grade that it was called Licensed Professional Counselor. At the time, I did not know of any Licensed Professional Therapist that looked and sounded like me or came from where I come from. The first goal was to find people who could tap into my vision and journey with me. With the right support I leaned into the process of becoming a licensed mental health therapist. The more experience I gained, the more my purpose evolved into reaching more and more people. Today, I am a licensed professional counselor, the founder of Equipped to Prosper, which is a therapy directory for Africans worldwide, and a private practice owner at Comfort Counseling Center.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My early experiences led me to become a licensed mental health counselor which then led to Equipped To Prosper the directory. The need for a therapy directory for Africans became clear during the global pandemic and through my therapy profession, speaking engagements and current events in Africa and the Diaspora. It was vital for me to create a space where Africans’ cultural and spiritual health are just as important as their mental and emotional health. I believe that being mentally and spiritually well set’s the foundation for a healthy life. The directory is a massive push to help Africans prosper in health.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
For me three qualities that were the most impactful in my journey have been being God-assured, self-assured and consistent. The beauty about this is, all three are within our control because it’s a choice that we can make daily. I believe at the core we all know what we really need to do to succeed, and if we don’t know we can connect with mentors, coaches and loved ones to help guide us to see the vision come to life. I’ll say this if you choose to do anything be confident in yourself and believe in yourself consistently.
Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
On average, people who work with providers who are relatable have a positive experience in therapy. Equipped To Prosper is an online platform that connects African clients anywhere in the world to African mental health providers. More African adults and young adults acknowledged that they could benefit from therapy but they want to work with quality and expert professionals who do not expect them to explain their existence, cultural reasoning, and spiritual beliefs before getting the support they need, and that is where Equipped To Prosper comes in.
