We were lucky to catch up with Consuela Chapman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Consuela, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Confidence, self-worth, and self-esteem are popular issues that I get to help others improve as a Mental Health Provider and Coach at Choices In Wellness PLLC. So, it’s been important for me to maintain a healthy sense of self. How did I get here? Well, my self-esteem was nurtured in childhood. I grew up in a two-parent household middle class. My father was in the military and my mother worked at the bank. As I reflect back I realize my father was very intentional about exposing my sister and me to an array of experiences, people, and cultures. There was also a lot of autonomy in the home and open dialogue. My parents were loving and never made me feel like I was not enough. Although I recall my mother saying ” A child should be seen and not heard”. I rejected that notion! I recognized at an early age my voice was my power tool and silence led to shame and insecurity. So, if I didn’t like something or didn’t want to do something I said it! I can honestly say that I developed my confidence and self-esteem by being comfortable being my authentic self.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am the group practice owner of Choices In Wellness PLLC. Choices In Wellness has had the esteemed honor of being recognized as the best mental health service in Raliegh and the Triangle for the 3rd year. It is truly an honor to be recognized by the community we serve. I am in the process of vetting another office location to serve Charlotte NC and Fayetteville NC.
I can’t forget to mention, that I am so excited to share that I have partnered with my daughter to start PawTails NC pet services. Fur friends provide much-needed emotional support to us and we want to offer a service that offers emotional support and companionship to pets while their owners are gone. We like to say “We are the home for pets”. We hope to begin offering obedience training, grooming, and more in early 2024.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
If there is any advice that I can offer to those early in their journey it would be to reclaim your voice. Often times it’s silenced/taken due to circumstances that are beyond our control. We all have stuff but we can get help from a therapist so that stuff doesn’t keep us stuck. Ditch the fake-to-you-make-it mentality as that perpetuates feelings of imposter syndrome. If you don’t know it learn it. Recognize that time is your biggest asset and be wise about how it’s invested. Burnout develops over time. Therefore, pause on purpose before you’re forced to stop.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Choices In Wellness along with community sponsors like NAMI NC and NC DHHS have hosted a Together We Thrive Mental Health Awareness Brunch for the last 2 years.
