We recently connected with Cookie B and have shared our conversation below.
Cookie, sincerely appreciate your selflessness in agreeing to discuss your mental health journey and how you overcame and persisted despite the challenges. Please share with our readers how you overcame. For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I never let go of my desire to see the other side. I chased light and everything good with everything I had. In the midst of some turmoil in my life, I found myself questioning everything about my existence and recognized patterns that led me to uncover every lie that was sticking to my existence and motivating my decisions. All the things that hindered me from experiencing a good life internally regardless of how my external space looked. I searched high and low for spaces that looked like the light I once knew – the heart of my grandmother, the servanthood of my mother, the love I’ve experienced through strangers…I learned what safe spaces were, what abundant life was, and moved to align myself and my spaces with what that looked like in company, habits, and environment.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
If I could choose one thing to do with the rest of my life it would be writing and performing spoken word to engage audiences towards action and change while executing business strategy and leading a creative space in the background. If you asked me that 10 years ago, I would deny all associations I had with the art. I started off with fears around being in the spotlight and gaining attention. I did not like public speaking, let alone know how to effectively communicate and express myself. I originally didn’t want anything to do with this art, but I knew it was something I was called to do so I went with it. Overtime I learned this art was not just something given to me to give to others or to share a message but it was also given to me to help me develop and grow into my best self. The special part about it is how it stretches me to step outside of my comfort zone to serve and engage with others in ways that help them to uncover their best selves. I often have outer body experiences when engaging in this craft and find myself looking at myself in awe of how far I’ve come.
I recently won a competition called How Sweet the Sound and experienced that part of this craft in a new way. That motivated me to finished things in my queue including the launch of spoken word projects on Spotify and other music streaming platforms, merch launches, and working on the start of private listening sessions in my city. It’s an exciting time.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Step outside of what you think you know about yourself – you are more than your personality traits. If a space calls for you to be more to reach your audience, be open to learning how you can give more.
If you ever feel scared to to take the leap, grab faith by the hand and jump anyway. As much as we can be mindful of things going wrong, we can be mindful of things going right. If you commit to doing your part, grace will cover you the rest of the way.
Keep your eyes open to ways you can grow and ways you can serve. Growth is necessary in your journey, so reflect often. Remain connected with others. Practice service so your heart remains pure in your process and you keep humility for the journey.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
ATOMIC HABITS
With all the things I take part in, having discipline and maximizing my time has been essential. This booked helped me to break habits into small pieces that make path for the big changes I needed in my life to see things through.
