We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Corey Spiegel a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Corey, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I had always wanted to run my own company so I knew that was my end game. How I was going to get there was a different story. On paper, I had what looked like the perfect executive job. And it was – for countless years – perfect. Until it wasn’t and I had to make some difficult decisions. Do I continue down the same road or bank on myself that I will figure it out and start something new that fuels and inspires me? I had searched high and low to find a community of other like-minded women that were in similar situations. I wanted to connect with them in person to listen, discuss, share, and advise on best practices with fresh perspectives based on real-world examples. The problem was that I couldn’t find it – or anything like it – that I was drawn to where it felt honest and authentic. And smart.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Light House was born based on one key question I kept asking myself throughout my time in the corporate world: “Why can’t I have a Board of Directors for my personal life?” Every woman deserves to have a community of supporters and a safe space to engage in honest, and sometimes challenging discussions about career paths, personal growth, mental health, relationships, beauty, and wellbeing, among other key issues. Life doesn’t come with a manual. In a world filled with constant information, rapid changes, and various distractions, staying mentally grounded and clear becomes even more curcial. Human connection is not only powerful, it’s necessary. It means laughter, support, validation, unbridled emotion. It is the relationship formed through common bonds, areas of interest, values, and shared experiences with real people. At Light House, we have personal conversations that are refreshing, meaningful, relatable, and transparent. Our members not only walk away with wisdom and understanding, but as the best versions of themselves. I created Light House for the countless women craving insight, camaraderie, and friendship we all need to navigate life. This is who we are.
About 2 years ago, we expanded our efforts into the luxury resort space. We help teach the skills that are vital to deeply relax and unwind. We believe that when you combine the physical and mental components of wellness, true restoration can happen. These engaging dialogues not only allow women to hear and learn from others who are in the same boat, but to also renew their own sense of appreciation, empowerment, and passion for life. Our customized programs are designed to be an immersive experience, fine-tuned for optimal wellbeing set in a holistic, healing, and life-affirming environment. It’s a judgement-free space to unpack, tell your story, and lean in, while enjoying world-class spa treatments with luxury amenities curated for your stay.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities for me are curiosity, resiliency, and effective communication.
Curiosity was super impactful as it’s the driving force behind learning and personal growth. It continues to encourage me to explore, ask questions, and have a desire to understand the world around me. In order to tap into this, it’s important to cultivate a mindset of wonder and ask yourself questions about everything you encounter. I read widely and deeply searching for diverse stories to spark new interests. I often challenge assumptions and am always open to different perspectives. As a result of this, I am a lifelong learner.
Resiliency pushed me to be persistent, strong, and tenacious. Life is filled with challenges and setbacks. Being resilient enables you to bounce back from adversity, learn from failures, and keep moving forward. While it takes time and practice, embracing failures as opportunities for growth and learning only makes you stronger. Develop a positive mindset and practice self-compassion. Seek support from mentors, friends, or support groups during tough times as you don’t have to go through it alone. Set realistic and digestible goals and break them down into bite-size manageable steps.
Effective communication is a fundamental skill in my personal and professional life, in fact, it is a principle pillar in our mission statement. It helps to convey ideas, build relationships, and collaborate effectively with others. I’ve learned to practice active listening to better understand others’ perspectives before responding. It takes time to work on your verbal and written communication skills. And you must be mindful of non-verbal cues such as body language and facial expressions as they alone can tell a completely different story. In addition to these skills, adaptability, empathy, and time management are also crucial attributes to develop. It’s important to remember that personal growth is a continuous journey, and there’s always room for improvement. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks or slow progress, and stay committed to your own development. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network of mentors, peers, and resources can also greatly enhance your journey.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
At Light House, we believe in the power of community. We’ve joined forces with leaders in the wellness, beauty, business, and women’s health industries, empowering our members to thrive in every area of their lives. We’re always looking to partner with new organizations that share our values: growth, connection, and knowledge. Whether it’s hosting an event or teaching a class, you gain a network of brilliant women when you collaborate together. There are many different opportunities where we are open and looking to collaborate if we can:
- Identify innovative ideas and solutions.
- Develop new products or services.
- Solve real-world challenges faced by many
- Work in a spirited way that feels like our visions are connected and aligned.
