We recently connected with Cøya and have shared our conversation below.
Cøya, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
As a creator, negativity and hate is bound to come your way especially if you are good at what you do. As it comes in I don’t take it personally but I am aware of it. Sometimes it can be helpful for a creative process, but there’s really nothing viable behind those words. I look at who is saying them. To see what’s inside that person making them feel that way. Why do they view my art as hate worthy? At the end of the day it’s usually because it hits a place for them they aren’t used to expressing. In my opinion you could see hate as necessary for building an insanely strong fanbase which is what I’m looking to do. That’s fine that people hate my work, because the ones that love it will scream that from the rooftops. I’m not looking to make everyone happy with my music. If you’ve listened to my songs you know they are for the real, and the real only. That’s not a given these days in human beings.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a singer/ songwriter for Believe which is a label based in Thailand. I also work with Warren chapel in the song writing department alongside my good friend Geoffrodamus. I’ve been writing and making music for going on 6 years now. But more recently in the last 3 years have dived deeper into expressing my voice and transitioning into the edm/house/dance music space. Last year was my first trip to Thailand, Laos and Korea. Beautiful countries. I’ll be back in July to perform. I have a new release coming in the next couple of months. Release date to be announced. What I feel is most exciting about making music is being able to collaborate with other people without ever speaking the same language. Music is a universal language. As well as connecting with people in my own country I am able to connect with millions of others through sound and love of creating.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities: dedication, consistency, self belief
If you are early in your journey, first and foremost perfect your craft. Choose a lane and expand out of that. Don’t try to do everything at once. This space is overwhelming because of how much there is to learn and digest. Be realistic with yourself about how much your brain can handle at once. Dedicate your time to one space of music or one craft and hone in on that skill. Develop it to the best of your ability, and then move on to the next and keep pushing. In everything, remember that some progress will always be significantly better than no progress. Don’t be hard on yourself, be patient. Everyone has their breakthrough moments, you cannot rush the creative process. Let it flow.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents taught me to never do anything that would disrespect the Lord, yourself, your team or your family. Also to never quit and to follow through. If I have a task, I need to finish it and see it through to the end. Along with those things they taught me how to problem solve. Which honestly got me to where I’m at now without any support in this journey from them. My parents really don’t even know what I do or where I am at in my music career. It’s always been hard not having a supportive family behind your dreams. Especially when you are following them, reaching goals, and actually making them into your reality. However through music I have found a new family. I hope to stay with my team for a long time to come. One day I hope they will see the community I have built. Until then I will be where I’m wanted.
