Meet Cxsey

We were lucky to catch up with Cxsey recently and have shared our conversation below.

Cxsey , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
You never have to consciously put in effort when you’re doing something that brings you joy, happiness, and a sense of self. When you wake up every morning and are forced to go to work, it simply feels like work. It’s something you would rather not be doing. When I’m making music, writing songs, making promo, or even networking, it never feels like I’m ever working because I simply love doing it all every step of the way. I have an abundance of confidence and self belief that I can achieve anything that I set my mind too. Unfortunately, an empire is not built overnight. Nothing great has ever been achieved in this world without a lot of hard work. I know that I just have to keep my work ethic, and self belief, and everything will fall right into place.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My artist name is cxsey, and I am a music artist. Something that makes me stand apart in a flooded industry is that I’m being unapologetically me. I make the music that I want to make regardless of the genre (which is mainly hip hop). I genuinely feel like nobody sounds like me. I feel like the best artist in the room every time I step in a studio. I started making music in a closet on a low end laptop when I was 17, and oh boy was it terrible. Over the last several years I’ve been able to improve and network to find the key pieces to my puzzle.

Although I get the label “rapper” quite often, I feel like I never try to make myself appear as something I’m not. From the way I dress, to the music I personally make, to the music I listen to in my everyday life.

I’m unapologetically me.

cxsey, dont forget the x.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Confidence. You can’t see it without believing in your vision first.

Creativity. You need to be able to paint a breathtaking picture on a blank canvas.

Trust. You need to be able to trust others to help you along the way. The pyramids weren’t built by one man.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
‘It’s All In Your Head, get out of your way” By Russ.

This book essentially projects confidence and self belief. Both of those qualities are essential to be successful in any field of work, not just music.
