We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dalton Turner. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dalton below.
Dalton, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I remember watching movies, music videos, etc. and thinking that they were missing something. I didn’t know what the right terms were and I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was I thought they were missing. Over time I started teaching myself how to write, how to use a camera, how to direct, how to edit, and everything in between. I was instantly hooked. Being able to take ideas that I could see in my head and show them to others through my cinematography was extremely fulfilling, and over time I started to develop my own unique, unconventional style.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
As a cinematographer, I do everything that consists of using a camera; commercials, weddings, music videos, events, but most importantly I make films. That’s my true passion; seeing the ideas I write come to life. I have a small team of extremely talented individuals who share the same passion as I do and we work together under our company name Sloth Cinema. We all share the same dream of establishing ourselves as a production company to be able to focus solely on making films. We consistently post to YouTube, and participate in film festivals all around the world. In addition to our short films that we regularly post and put into festivals, we are also working on 3 feature films projected to release Fall of 2024 – Fall of 2025. They are The Dust of Carbon Hill, Cold Was The Night, and Black Velvet.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Firstly, I believe one of the most beneficial pieces of knowledge I picked up along the way would be applied into acting. Chris, a very good friend of mine and Sloth team member, had agreed to star in one of the films we were working on but had no prior acting experience. After talking through the role and the fundamentals of acting, we came up with a term that instantly changed the quality of the performances in all of our films from then on; be what you would want to see. Though it sounds very simple, just imagine yourself as the audience watching your own performance. It helps you get out of your head, and into that of the character you’re playing. Secondly, I got a really good price of advice from a more seasoned writer and film maker who has been a mentor to me. He told me to just try and capture the action of a shot, but to capture the emotion of it as well; to treat every shot I take as if it were a painting in an art gallery. Thirdly, I think the number one thing that helped me grow as a film maker was failing. Nothing will shape your character and make you learn more than that. The drive to educate yourself, come back stronger, and see the project through can only come from failures. The most important part of failing is learning from it and seeing how you can improve.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
We are always looking for new people/teams to collaborate with. My team and I can only learn so much from each other, but when we bring new people into the mix we also bring in new ideas, new perspectives, and new conversations. Things like that will not only help us grow professionally, but will also open our eyes to new possibilities and help us further perfect the Sloth style.
