We were lucky to catch up with Damaris Ryland recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Damaris, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
Until I began to realize that everything I have now and have had in the past was a result of taking risks, which has led me to where I am today, I really wasn’t big of a risk-taker. I wouldn’t say I tend to take chances; alternatively, I’d say I choose to go against my better judgment. It’s never an undesirable decision to give anything new a try. I continually encouraged myself to keep going, remain creative outside the box, refuse to take “no” as an answer, and never give up. Risks and attentiveness lead to success.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’ll provide a little introduction of myself: my name is Damaris, I’m 21 years old, a business owner, a hairstylist, and I actually own three companies. student in college studying in accounting and entrepreneurship. I enjoy working as a business owner and hairstylist because it enables me to get acquainted with others whom I never knew existed and learn about the ins and outs of numerous entrepreneurial possibilities that are extremely beneficial but are not always straightforward for me to find. I’ll soon be launching a new collection under my IGlosstheslay brand. Keep an eye out for it, but I wouldn’t like to say too much. My hairline will start to recede.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ll put six things that helped me stay grounded: self-control, perseverance, initiative, time management, teamwork, and communication These six tools served as my tools for navigating the business and hairstyling worlds. You will learn more about your capabilities and how to be successful by applying the concepts to your daily activities and business. Be open-minded and eager to learn from your oversights at all times. You’ll soon notice improvements in both your actions and methods.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
Invest in areas where you aren’t as skilled because, if you can tell you’re good at something without even trying, what else do you need to improve on if you were virtually born with that niche? Working on various endeavors can provide you greater insight into what you enjoy and find objectionable.
