Daniel , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my father. He served 20 years in the United States Army and another 17 years working in the Pentagon with the POW/MIA’s. He also has his Masters Degree which he obtained while holding down a full time job. Seeing him get up every morning at 4:30, drive over 50 miles one way to get to work by 6:30 and then do it again in the evenings, five days a week was quite the eye opener and instilled discipline in me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I own an artificial turf company in Houston Texas, called Texans Turf. I’ve owned it a little over three years. I really enjoy the satisfaction that we get when we completely transform someone’s yard. It went from a dirt/mud pit to a beautiful green backyard paradise that can be enjoyed with very little maintenance time. The bulk of our customers are dog owner’s and with the heavy amount of rain that Houston receives you can imagine the mud the dogs create in the yard as well as the mud they track into the house. The artificial grass eliminates all of this and comes with a 15 year warranty. You can spend your weekend enjoying your yard as opposed to working in your yard.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Having integrity would be one at the top of the list. If you say something do it. If you make a promise or commitment, honor it. I average 3 – 5 appointments a day and can honestly say I’ve never been late or missed an appointment with a client. They really appreciate being prompt and not wasting their time.

Resilience would be at the top of the list as well. If you run into a problem, address it immediately and fix it. If you can’t, come up with a plan and get it corrected in a timely manner. The customer will appreciate you being upfront and handling it to their satisfaction. Even if it means taking a loss on the project. Chances are that client will refer you to others because of your efforts.

Consistency is another trait that your customers will appreciate. We have done extra work on dozens of clients yards that were so happy with the initial project and results that they want to add more work after completion.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We are always looking for pool builders, home builders and landscape companies to work with. We currently work with at least a dozen of these types of companies. None of these companies know how to install artificial turf or don’t want to do it with the employees they have and would rather call in a professional to handle it. If these companies send us work on a regular basis we will reduce the price somewhat to allow them to make a little extra money on the project. It works out great for both companies and we try and refer them to work that we don’t do. It’s a win win.
