We recently connected with DANNY BADER and have shared our conversation below.
DANNY, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I’ve come to understand imposter syndrome is the product of a few things: comparison to others, questioning your message/content and focusing on any negative feedback you receive.
A major blessing for me was years ago when I was delivering a workshop in Cleveland for Progressive Insurance and a woman came up to me after class and told me the loss of her 12-year old daughter several years prior. I expressed my sadness and offered encouragement. She smiled, hugged me and said, ” It’s okay. After hearing you I feel for the first time I can move on. Thank you.”
You must pay attention to the value you offer people…to how you make them feel, and to what they will do differently after having been with you.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
From an early age I had the deep desire to support people on this journey we call life. I suppressed this, working jobs to make money versus serving. At 28, my friend and I were electrocuted when we hit an electric line with the metal ladder we were lowering. He and I both died…only I came back to life. This tragedy disturbed the dormant desire to serve and I evolved into a speaker and author.
My first book, Back to Life, The Path of Resilience, is based on the accident and then my journey back, It’s a fictionalized tale based on reality, as I find it easier to write and offer the reader lessons and principles via story and characters. I published three other books: Abraham’s Diner, I Met Jesus for a Miller Lite, and Taking the Sh*t Out of the Show. These are also stories with messages embedded in the journey of the characters.
I also host a podcast called, Back To Life, where I interview guests about their story and how they created vision, fulfillment and resilience in their lives.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe the three qualities most impactful on my journey are: the compassion and the need to serve: the creativity to offer my message via speaking and writing and social media, and the Faith I have that this life is not the end. These have grown stronger through a focus on them, and seeking the support needed from others with more knowledge than me.
For people on the beginning part of their journey I’d suggest they develop a vision of what they want to create, be sure to imagine the end. Then gain clarity on the skills and mindset needed to do this…then seek support and “do the work” over and over again.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
The Saint, The Surfer and the CEO is a book written by Robin Sharma. I read it many years ago and it was a source of inspiration for me to begin my journey as a writer. The Saint reminded me of the powerful principle of Faith. The Surfer reminded me of the powerful principle to pursue your own development first as a good human…then the material stuff. The CEO reminded me of the powerful principle that leadership is not about the position, rather it is about how much you can develop and influence those you lead.
