Meet Darrell Hester

We recently connected with Darrell Hester and have shared our conversation below.

Darrell, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
This is an interesting question because I struggled with imposter syndrome for so long. Imposter syndrome is defined by the feeling that I don’t deserve what I have, and I definitely felt that for such a long time.

As I was developing as a digital content creator, I have been exposed to so many creative, innovative and fun internet personalities. These people have great work ethic and passion, but never saw the same amount of success that I have seen up to this point. I mean, here I am writing an answer to an interview question all because of who I am on the internet! Yet, those creative individuals (who are more creative that I will EVER be), may never have a chance to do this.

Over time, though, I developed a sense of understanding. Realizing that all of our paths are different. And I began to understand that although millions of people see my face and hear my voice every month, that isn’t where my value lies. I don’t have to doubt what I bring to the table because I know it’s something interesting and special. Once I accepted that, the imposter syndrome disappeared.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Since I was young, music has been the center of my creative endeavors. I began creating content as a means to express my musical passion. Making terrible singing videos with my potatoe of a phone. Although the videos weren’t great, I knew I loved the feeling of making something.

Some then I developed Song Theory where I take my love for conspiracies and combine them with finding the deeper meaning behind every song, music video and artist. What’s exciting is how many people I have reached and positively impacted with my content. Celebrities, everyday viewers and even huge brands have seen me and my content and are excited to work with me. It has opened so many doors.

Now, I am currently in the process of expanding the brand with a sketch comedy page, a gaming page and a page focused on teaching people how manage their social medias. This is important to me because I don’t want to just create song theories, but I want to expand into other genres of video, thereby growing the baseline audience for each page.

I encourage anyone who wants to create to start NOW. Because you never know what doors will open for you until you press “Post”.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most important qualities I have found to be necessary in my journey are confidence, (because you have to be confident in your ability to create.) Observant, (Seeing what people want content about, what’s trending and popular.) And obsession. You have to be absolutely obsessed with creating. Obsessed with making it better each time you press “post”. Obsession is so very important.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?
My biggest challenge is time management. With so many things I want to create, there are only so many hours in a day to create them. I strive everyday to satisfy my clients, create engaging content for my audience and be a great husband and father. It’s all a juggling act, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
