Meet Darrell Somers

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Darrell Somers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Darrell below.

Darrell, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
The hard part about being creative in my art is finding time to sit down and paint. I get inspired from my past memories and seeing things throughout every day. When I finally get to sit down and start painting, I get lost in the painting. Unlike my art, my writing tells me when I will write. Like a recording that plays over and over in my mind I hear two or three sentences over and over until I put them down on paper. After I write the sentences down there will be another sentence then another until there are no more. Then I wait until another recording starts playing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My artwork is a little different than most artist. I love to paint landscape, birds, but I also like to paint whimsical characters from my past memories. I am always asked what I like to paint most, I always say that I enjoy painting all of it. My writings are inspirational, encouraging, with a touch of whimsical. I show and sale my art at several different places in Mesquite and Mansfield TX. Bearcave Coffee In the downtown square of old Mesquite. Dirty Job Brewery, Flying Squirrel Coffee, and Pour in Mansfield TX. I have published two books of my writings which can be purchased on Amazon. My Walk by Darrell Somers and Parents Love by Darrell Somers.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first thing I would tell someone who is just starting their journey, do what inspires you. The second thing would be to listen to your heart and do not be afraid of what others may think about what you are doing. For years I ignored the voices in my head trying to get me to write. Third never ignore the voices just because you don’t understand what they are wanting you to do, go out on that limb.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Over the past 12 months I feel that I am always trying to improve my painting skills. I have published two books of my writings in November 2023. I finally started writing around 2016 after having sentences in my head on repeat. It wasn’t until last year I let people start reading them because I wasn’t sure why or what I was writing.
