Meet David Rosen

We were lucky to catch up with David Rosen recently and have shared our conversation below.

David, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I think imposter syndrome is a very real thing that we all deal with at times, even after breaking through and knowing that we’re not imposters. But the most important thing is just continuing to do the thing you love with no expectation. I want to be successful in all that I do of course, but just knowing that I’m doing it because I love doing it, means I don’t really have to worry about whether or not someone else thinks I should be or am capable of doing the creative things that I do. So it really comes down to just continuing to do the thing over and over again, in this case music (and podcasting).

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I kind of split my time between two separate but related by being audio-based worlds. I started off as a music composer. I do film scores and music for TV, commercials and other kinds of media. I also release albums of instrumental music and have worked on all kinds of other music projects. I tryto work in a wide range of styles and genres, but my strongest suit is darker, more tension filled music like what you’d typically hear in a thriller. Even my albums of music skew towards the dark side, but even with that I try to bring in influences from all over the music world from alternative rock to industrial to pop and rap. I’ve been doing all of that for almost 20 years. About 7 years ago, I started getting into podcasting and that has really become a central part of who I am. I have hosted the Piecing It Together Podcast, a podcast about movies and the movies that inspired them. I also produce it and produce another movie podcast called Awesome Movie Year. Over these last few 7 years I’ve also produced other podcasts and made music for them and been a consultant for podcasters.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. I truly love doing the things that I do. None of it ever feels like a chore or a job, no matter how long or big or complicated a project becomes. I love figuring out the best approach and then doing it.

2. I’m pretty personable when it comes to collaboration. Even though I don’t do a lot of collaboration with other musicians, I’m constantly collaborating with filmmakers, project producers and other creatives.

3. I know what my strengths and weaknesses are within what I can do and I try to play to the stengths while ignoring the weaknesses. Which pretty much always works out for the best.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one challenge is always cutting through social media algorithms. I’m 43 so I’m no longer out at parties, bars, clubs and social events. So promotion of everything I do almost entirely takes place online, and you’re at the mercy of the algorithms. I have a website and mailing list of course, but social media can feel like shouting into the void, and that’s where most of my listeners and community are. Someone said recently “I became an artist to make art, not to trick an algorithm” and no truer words have ever been spoken.
