We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Davyhon Canada a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Davyhon, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from my pops. He instilled putting in the time, practicing & getting better at my craft. He would make me practice & learn songs and I couldn’t go out to play with all the other kids until I got it right. I appreciate those times now. I also understand the characteristics he helped develop in me.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
What I do is music. What I’ve always done is music. When I was going through tough times in life and trying to figure out my path, music was the one constant that no matter what I was doing I always came back to.
Around 2019 or so I had a really bad car accident. My car flipped upside down & knocked down a street light pole & gate of swami international on rosecrans. The pressure of hitting that saved the car from hitting the wall behind the gate. If you were to look at the car you would’ve thought it was over. But, me & my friend crawled out the back window of the car with no injuries & no harm. I’ll never forget a man came from outside the business & said “you know you’re blessed, you know God saved your life.”
I say all that to say , afterwards I had to really sit & think what am I going to do with myself & my life? Music was my answer. I thought , I’ve been doing it most of my life , starting playing drums at age 2, my family had a music background, I truly & genuinely had a passion & loved music wholeheartedly so I decided to go to school for it.
Along that journey the road traveled to get to the destination sometimes changes & that’s perfectly fine, you adapt but don’t lose sight & change the end destination. For me the destination has always been to be in position to do music.
Which is how DUNGEONMUSIC the company the brand was birthed. Now we’re putting out our own music & doing what we love & enjoying it & that will always be a win in my book. Im here for a reason & I truly believe music is one of them.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Working hard. Always willing to learn. Being a good person. I believe you have to work hard in life to achieve anything. You have to be willing to learn because no one person knows it all. Being a good person can’t sometimes put you in places that you’re not necessarily qualified for. But they’ll see something in you & say he or she has potential let’s give them a chance. Sometimes it’s not always about how talented you are.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
I feel like I’m understanding that things happen for a reason so that you can learn the lesson & grow from it bad or good. One thing I’m learning more is you really do have to become better as a person & your choices & what you allow because that can be the make or break of everything your working so hard to achieve. So I’d say self improvement & growing as an individual is something I’ve been working on daily.
