Meet Debbie Roberts

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Debbie Roberts. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Debbie below.

Hi Debbie, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Both of my parents had strong work ethics. My mother worked her way through college and graduate school even with physical mobility limitations. My father did not complete high school but became a master carpenter. They both encouraged my brother and I to persevere through disappointments and to celebrate the victories. They demonstrated competence and good character and expected the same from their children.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a retired Special Education teacher. I taught exceptional students with both physical and intellectual needs for over 25 years. Kindness, patience and respect were qualities I tried to convey to my students. Upon retiring, I started a small business and found these same qualities are appreciated by my customers.

My business, Providence Preserves LLC, specializes in making all-natural small batch Jams, Pickles and Chow-Chow. We try to use local and regional in-season grown produce. When customers purchase our products, they know it has been freshly made with locally sourced produce and no preservatives or additives.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three things I believe to be crucial for a business to grow are (1) good customer service, (2) good quality product(s) and (3) the williness to learn new skills to grow the business.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Because our preserves are natural, containing no artificial ingredients, hand-ladled and made in small batches, I would like to see some of our products in small specialty gourmet food stores.
