We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Debi Carlin Boyle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Debi, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I love fitness so I had a side hustle of teaching spin and fitness classes, as well as personal training while I was working my main career as a Commercial Television Producer. I found myself answering lots of questions from crew members and clients about diet and exercise. My passion yelled much stronger toward helping people become healthier as opposed to selling them sugary soft drinks and junk food. I went back to school to study holistic health and nutrition along with taking courses on how to be successful in the Health Coaching field. I must say this is a much more satisfying career choice, watching and helping people realize they have the power to change the direction of their life just by making self-care a priority.
I discovered at a very young age that lifestyle plays a vital role in how we look, feel, and react to everything that surrounds us. I came to realize that there are many things that feed us in life in addition to the food on our plate.
As a young child, I watched as my family succumbed to cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases that left me feeling helpless and hopeless. I knew I did not want to go down this path for myself – or my future family. That is when my personal journey began towards wellness, and when I truly realized that I could shift my family’s bad habits to good habits for a longer, healthier, and more joyous life.
I drastically altered my eating habits from processed foods to whole, fresh foods, such as vegetables, lean proteins, and good fats. I also started playing tennis and weight training which instantly yielded results; I slimmed down, I became more energetic, I eliminated my brain fog, and my hair and nails starting growing like crazy. I quickly started to attract everything I wanted in life simply by making my self-care my number one priority.
The snowball effect of good self-care was undeniably present, and I knew if it could work for me, it could work for anyone.
After many years as a Television Commercial Producer, mother, and wife, I decided it was time to take my knowledge of health and wellness and share it with others.
Reinventing myself mid-life after a divorce wasn’t easy, going back to school and giving up a career that was familiar and lucrative was not only frightening but challenging to start over without financial security. I plowed forward and
I am now a full-time Health, Nutrition, and Fitness Coach with my current company BalancedLife by Debi; helping others see results that are not just dramatic, but lasting and sustainable for their continued healthy lifestyles.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I started my company, “Fit By Design” many years ago when I became a Spin Instructor and a Personal Trainer and realized no two people are alike when it comes to diet, exercise, and over-all lifestyle. We are unique human beings, we need to understand our individual responses to what we put into our bodies and how we treat them. I am a certified health & nutrition coach & a distinguished fitness and nutrition expert, with an impressive track record spanning over two decades in enhancing health and wellness. My reputation is solidified through my work in Los Angeles, where I am recognized as a top personal trainer & fitness instructor for women and a holistic health coach. The who’s who of Hollywood, including David Duchovny, Nick Nolte, Kyra Sedgwick, Kevin Bacon, Gabrielle Reece, Jamie Kurtz, David Steinberg, and Jennifer Beals, have benefited from my fitness expertise.
My philosophy is grounded in the essentials of fitness and nutrition. I steer clear of passing fads, focusing instead on proven methods to unlock my clients’ genetic potential. My holistic approach to wellness incorporates balanced exercises, diets, and lifestyle adjustments, helping women who are seeking sustainable strength training, nutrition, & health improvements.
Through my various platforms, including online video blogs, magazine contributions, my podcast “BalancedLife with Debi Carlin Boyle,” and my upcoming book on staying youthful, I aim to disseminate straightforward and holistic health guidance. My hope is that my content is a beacon for women looking for a health coach, offering practical advice away from the quick fixes flooding the market.
My mission is clear: to empower the widest possible audience to lead long, healthy lives. My approach not only delivers dramatic results but ensures these improvements are lasting, guiding my clients towards a healthier, more balanced existence.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
looking back the most important area of knowledge I acquired was that of understanding that food is medicine and medicine is food. I think anybody on a transformative journey needs to start there. Nutritious foods is a pivotal element in the journey towards optimal health and wellness.
The next is movement. Exercise helps one to metabolize their food efficiently allows them to gain and maintain strength, flexibility, and vitality through-out their lives.
The third is sleep. When we sleep we recharge our mitochondria which are the power packs in our cells
that go to work when we are asleep. They convert our food into energy that our cells can use to grow, divide and function. I recommend 7-9 hours a night.
The best way to start is small. Take one actionable step each day toward your ultimate goal.
With food start by crowding out the good with the bad, for example more phyo-nutrients on each plate and less process, starchy, sugary foods. Eventually you will crowd out those bad for you foods with the good for you ones.
With exercise start by walking, biking, or taking a dance class. Find something you like to do and just get moving, eventually you’ll find what sparks you and it will become part of your daily life.
With sleep try to stop eating three hours before bed, turn off all your devices at least a hour before, and dim the lights, you’ll be surprised how much this helps to make you sleepy and keep you asleep through-out the night.
These three areas of knowledge changed my life and have changed the lives of many of my clients, I think it’s a great place to start for anyone on a health and longevity journey.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
