Meet Decheng Cui

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Decheng Cui. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Decheng below.

Decheng, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
The purpose of my work is to use it to fight fear from death. Since the demise of the flesh is inevitable, then I can only find ways to plant the fragments of my soul among human civilizations, to root it to console myself. Therefore, it is unimportant to me that what kind of art language I use, and it play a whole key role in my work that what kind of my concept, my soul, in it. For me, whether it’s art creation, gallery operation, or teaching, they are all ways for me to communicate my ideas to others.

As both an artist and a gallery owner, I bear the mission of shaping culture. in today’s technology-driven world, I never underestimate the power of culture. On the contrary, I believe culture is more crucial than ever. While technology answers the question of how to do things, culture provides the direction of what to do. Whether it’s my art or my gallery, their purpose is to guide culture in constructing a better future for humanity.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
4C Gallery

4C means for Contemporary Art, for Conceptual Art, for Chinese Community, and also for the founders, Chen and Cui.

We aim to provide a pure land for Chinese-speaking artist and audiences in the gap between Chinese culture and American culture, and to nurture their own soil. We will provide a continuous and professional exhibition space for Chinese American contemporary art in Los Angeles, and organize our own cultural activities for Chinese speaking community in the United States.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I believe that regardless of your profession or field of study, I strongly recommend delving into and studying the following three knowledge domains: philosophy, physics, and theology. The knowledge in these three domains can help a person better establish their worldview, aiding in understanding the possibilities of their own thinking and the possibilities of the world.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Wisdom of Life-Arthur Schopenhauer

This book helped me rebuild my long-shattered self-confidence. Before I read this book, I was a person with very low self-esteem because I had a reading disability, but I was unaware of it. After reading this book, I realized that many of my previous thoughts were not without value, and I was not alone.
