Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dee Sader. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dee, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Imposter Syndrome is a hard one. I think we all go through it. But me especially. As I never went to school for fashion. Im self taught. I learned everything through YouTube and shadowing colleagues along the way. Some days I think I don’t deserve how far Ive come, but Ive learned experience comes in diff shapes and forms. Not all experience is tied to education. My experience came from learning my skills along the way. I look back at some of the work I’ve done and give myself a pat on the back, I may have not known what I was doing then, but I had the passion to figure it out and learn it. Which is valuable in itself. Imposter Syndrome will have you doubting your own achievements. Don’t let it. You are capable and have made it this far, don’t let the doubts creep in the cracks of your confidence. Fill those cracks with self assurance. Remind yourself that you got this, and people will also believe what you tell yourself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hi! My name is Dee, I’m a celebrity technical designer. How I basically like to explain what I do is, I’m Cinderella’s mice. I’m the woman behind the product. That makes the product fit you. That brings the vision to life. If you’re a brand owner, then a technical designer is someone you need on your team. We are the architects of the apparel world. Without us, your brand would never execute properly. What sets me different than other tech’s is that I’m extremely sought out for for my detail and accuracy. I’ve worked with many top brands. If you’ve worn it, I probably had a hand in it. Technical design is a very specialized niche. You need to have an eye for detail, and knowledge of how fabric fits. Along with sizing and grading. You need to understand your customer and want your consumer is looking for. I specialize in shape wear and functional fashion. If you’re looking to smooth and sculpt your curves, I can help get that done. I was the lead tech at Skims when it first launched. Your favorite waist trainer by Kim K? I designed that.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Attention to detail, creativity, and confidence. These three really helped me become the technical designer I am today. Each of these qualities set me up for success. Without my keen attention to detail, my skills wouldn’t be sought out after. Without my confidence in what I do, I wouldn’t have developed relationships with certain brands and people who ended up referring me to even more brands that helped me build my clientele. And of course without creativity, you really are limiting not only your clients, but yourself at what you have to offer. Forcing yourself to be creative in your thinking and delivery will be the reason you are memorable in any industry you work in.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking for new brands or clients that are in need of my help and experience to take their brand to the next level. You can have a great idea on paper, but without me your idea will remain there. I can help bring it to life, and even better, make sure it fits properly so that your customers constantly come back to you for their favorite tee, dress or even swim line. How many times have we all purchased a piece of clothing that we loved the look of, but the fit was just not there and we had to get it altered. I help avoid those alternations by making sure the fit is what the consumer is after.
