We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DeJhanie Brown a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DeJhanie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being the only one in the room who looks like me has been a transformative journey, one that I navigate fearlessly by embracing my true self. In full transparency, I’ve learned that being authentically me fosters a level of trust that goes beyond any facade. I don’t shy away from being myself, and this genuine approach has become a cornerstone in building meaningful connections in any setting.
Standing strong on my morals and principles, I bring an unwavering authenticity to every interaction. I’ve realized that owning my creativity goes hand in hand with owning who I am. This mindset not only propels my success but also sets a precedent for others to embrace their uniqueness.
In a world where conformity can sometimes overshadow individuality, I’ve found strength in being unapologetically genuine. People appreciate the realness, and it has allowed me to create spaces where diversity isn’t just acknowledged but celebrated. This commitment to authenticity, coupled with a dedication to my own moral compass, has become a guiding light in the spaces where I stand out.
In essence, being the only one in the room isn’t a challenge; it’s an opportunity to showcase the power of being true to oneself. By standing firm on my values, embracing my creativity, and being authentically me, I’ve not only conquered spaces but reshaped them, leaving an indelible mark that authenticity is a force to be reckoned with.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am the founder and creative force behind Brandedd Creative Studio, a dynamic hub of creativity and transformation.
At Brandedd Creative Studio, our primary mission is to empower small businesses by breathing new life into their brands through strategic rebranding. With a keen eye for market dynamics and consumer trends, we specialize in tailoring brand identities that not only resonate with the right target audience but also drive significant revenue growth.
Our approach is rooted in a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by small businesses. We recognize that a powerful brand goes beyond aesthetics; it’s a holistic strategy that communicates values, engages audiences, and ultimately propels businesses toward success.
With a wealth of experience spanning over 12 years in branding and marketing, I founded Brandedd Creative Studio as a response to the evolving needs of small businesses. We believe that every brand has a unique story to tell, and our role is to translate that narrative into a compelling visual language.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back on my journey, three qualities that were instrumental in my success were time management, confidence, and the ability to think outside of the box.
Time Management:
Effective time management allowed me to navigate multiple responsibilities and projects efficiently. To develop this skill, I recommend setting clear priorities, breaking down tasks into manageable steps, and utilizing tools or techniques such as time blocking. Embrace a mindset of productivity and learn to delegate tasks when necessary. Consistency in managing your time effectively will create a solid foundation for success.
Confidence:
Confidence played a pivotal role in my ability to make decisions, take risks, and lead effectively. Building confidence is an ongoing process. Start by acknowledging your achievements, both big and small. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, seek constructive feedback, and surround yourself with a supportive network. Confidence is cultivated through experience, so don’t shy away from stepping out of your comfort zone.
Thinking Outside of the Box:
The ability to think outside of the box fueled my creativity and problem-solving skills. Cultivate this skill by exposing yourself to diverse experiences, industries, and perspectives. Encourage brainstorming sessions, welcome unconventional ideas, and be open to experimentation. Challenge yourself to see situations from different angles and explore innovative solutions. This mindset will set you apart in your journey.
For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace a growth mindset. Recognize that skills are developed over time, and every challenge is an opportunity to learn. Seek mentorship from those with experience, be proactive in seeking knowledge, and don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. Surround yourself with a supportive community, as collaboration often sparks innovative thinking. Remember, success is a journey, and the continuous development of time management, confidence, and creative thinking will undoubtedly pave the way for your growth and achievement.
