Meet DeJongh Wells

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DeJongh Wells. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

DeJongh, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic is deeply rooted in the strong example set by my parents. Growing up in the US Virgin Islands, I witnessed firsthand the tireless dedication of my parents—a school teacher and a fireman. Their commitment to their respective professions and the hard work they put in to provide for our family has been a significant influence on my work ethic. They lead by example, emphasizing the importance of diligence, perseverance, and dedication in pursuing goals. The sacrifices they made and the values they instilled have shaped my approach to work and life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As human beings we’re storytellers and having grown up in the US Virgin Islands, I’d listen to the radio a lot. Maybe it was the local news or national news, I paid attention to the reporter and how she or he spoke and painted a mental picture for listeners.

Because I listened to the radio a lot, I was also influenced by the music that I heard and thus began my love for all types of music.

The love of music- Soca, Calypso, Reggae, and Rap- allowed me to travel to parts of the world that I hadn’t visited yet, but I knew that when I had the opportunity to travel, I had a good list of places to choose from.

I created a sneaker lifestyle video show in 2005, with then Sole Collector Magazine and the Obsessive Sneaker Disorder podcast in 2007, because of my love of storytelling and audio.

As with anything, I did my research and figured out how to use the internet, along with message boards to interact with people to build relationships and a community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The best way to learn is through volunteering, having a thirst for learning, and asking questions to further understand why someone does what they do and how they do it.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents made it a point that I attended schools that were challenging and was a part of organizations and groups that allowed me to interact with people with various levels of education and life experiences.

For example, I was involved in the Cub Scouts and eventually the Boy Scouts. Through these experiences, I was able to become a volunteer with the Youth Conservations Corps, in Yellowstone National Park, in 1988.
