Meet Delynn Cavens

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Delynn Cavens a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Delynn , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I believe I was about four or five, when one day, I sat with my cousins and watched pro wrestling on tv. I remember how cool the pyro was during their entrances, how creative and colorful the outfits were, and how amazing the action was. From then on, I’ve had quite the obsession with the sport. Eventually I found myself watching every week. It got to the point where, I would hassle my grandparents into getting me replica championship belts and action figures. This would lead to me copying everything I saw, despite the warnings that told me not to do so. Finally I got see my first pro wrestling event live, it was amazing to view in person. It was awesome watching them bring so much joy and excitement to the crowd. From then on I knew that this was what I wanted to do, in life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I LOVE anime, and not just the obvious favorites, but the obscure ones as well. I’ve been watching since the Toonami days and I would definitely say it has had a major effect on my personality.
I also like to sketch from time to time, whether it be logos, designs for my gear or whatever else comes to mind.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Ambition is a very good quality, I don’t think I wouldn’t have gotten this far without it. I knew this was what I wanted to do and pursued it at every chance I got.
Athleticism is another good quality to have, especially in my line of work. Thankfully, I’ve always been naturally athletic growing up. As I got older I would start to expand on it by heading to the gym regularly.
Creativity is important too. I feel that in any aspect your goal should be to stand out from the rest.
And if I had to give any advice, it would be to do your research. Learn more about your goal and what it takes to achieve it. Learn the possible hardships you’ll face along the way so your better prepared. Also learn of the many great names before you, who decided to take the same path as you and succeeded. This often leads to inspiration which makes your motivation grow stronger.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
I would definitely spend majority of my days with family, friends, and anyone else I cherish. I would also use the time to tie up any loose ends I have and make sure that my legacy would live on for years.
