Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dennis Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dennis, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My generosity comes from growing up in a household where my mom was on a fixed income supporting 3 black boys and herself with help from others around us. i always thought by not having the latest in name brand I wasn’t good enough but understanding materialistic I things of the world don’t make you, but character does. While growing up, getting assistance from family and friends taught me there are some good people still alive. My mom also showed no matter what it may seem like GOD will always make a way for us. Growing up in church with support and love from those around us taught me it doesn’t hurt to be a helping hand to those around you who may just not have enough. Later on, in my teenage years I grew to understand it more and activate my generosity and bless others with personal things I had that could be a help to them in their time of need. The saying is ITS ME NOW BUT COULD BE YOU LATER.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Dennis Smith I’m the visionary and founder of a nonprofit organization (Reaching Hands) which is located in Miami Florida I’m very hands-on with the creative side and also handling all the moving parts of this organization ensuring the vision doesn’t get lost and remaining focused on our purpose. I’m also a volunteer as well; I don’t deem myself to be better than anybody because I always remember it could be ME. Reaching Hands specializes in making all homeless and displaced individuals feel like they’re the only ones that matter when we’re one on one with them in events. We connect with them on a spiritual, emotional and mental level with them so they can understand we are human too and it could easily be us in their shoes. Reaching hands is set apart from any other non-profit for 3 unique reasons- integrity, Kindness and Excellence in all we do in servicing the homeless and displaced individuals. I’m most proud of my dedication and being able to manifest my vision and appreciating what an honor it is being able to connect with people from all walks of life. It’s rewarding to see how many have tapped into my vision and are willing to reach hands and assist me with this organization. It’s not mine it’s for ALL of us. My organization offers a seed of a new start in life and provides basic needs and essentials that include but are not limited to food, clothing, shoes and toiletry items to take care of themselves and a smile because it’s really about the connections we make and the impact on their lives that I always want them to remember but most importantly, that we love them and care.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I know looking back on this journey called LIFE I always kept three qualities close to me during my journey are Simplicity, Patience & Perseverance. I understood the simplicity of things never should be overdone to be seen or heard but mastering being the one without speaking. Its so much beauty in the simplicity of things. Patience taught me in due time if its meant to be it will be with the help of GOD. While in patience there is a lesson and not a LOST and that’s the beauty of this journey. This perseverance thing was tricky but its so much joy in learning that the race isn’t given to the swift but to the one who endures to the end. Staying the course is the key to success in this thing called life. My advice to those who are in their early journey of life is to tap into who you are with prayer and GOD leading you every step of the way. In addition always keep a journal with you to lock in your creative moments that may pop up randomly while staying true to you.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth for me as been ACCEPTING. I know you may wonder why I chose accepting because I learned to accept things and people for who and what they are and move on with grace. Accepting isn’t a bad thing but it’s apart of all our lives and once activated you’ll never have to worry about missing the lesson in that season. Now I understand that we have the right to accept things and dwell on them but what does that really do for us? stress us because it’s out of our control because we have to understand that place had brought us to where we are now, and the person taught us what we should accept and not tolerate for our next lesson. I’m forever grateful for every soul I’ve encountered in this thing called life its never a LOST but a LESSON. Thank you, GOD, for keeping me to be able to share my story with all readers I come in contact with God bless you all.
