We recently connected with Denny Smolinski and have shared our conversation below.
Denny, thank you so much for making time for us today. We can’t wait to dive into your story and the lessons you’ve learned along the way, but maybe we can start with something foundational to your success. How have you gone about developing your ability to communicate effectively?
My journey to effective communication was one of hands-on experience and relentless pursuit of understanding the perspectives of others. In my early years, I quickly realized that for any message to be truly impactful, it had to resonate with the person on the receiving end. This insight became my guiding principle.
I spent countless hours honing my craft, from drafting precise emails to delivering confident presentations. I immersed myself in every communication task, big or small, always keeping the recipient’s perspective at the forefront.
In my quest for effectiveness, I consciously avoided the use of jargon. I understood that clear, concise language is key to ensuring my message is not just heard but also understood.
The journey to effective communication is continuous, and I embrace every opportunity to learn and improve. But at the end of the day, it all boils down to empathy and understanding – seeing the world through the eyes of the person you’re communicating with.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Know Your Strengths Understanding your strengths is an essential part of personal and professional growth. It’s about acknowledging what you excel at and leveraging those skills to achieve your goals. In my career, I’ve identified technology and team management as my core strengths. I’m passionate about developing innovative solutions and empowering my teams to reach their potential.
Know your weaknesses
While it’s crucial to understand your strengths, recognizing your weaknesses is equally important. It’s not about dwelling on shortcomings, but rather about identifying areas for improvement and taking proactive steps to address them.
When a task falls outside my area of expertise, I believe in bringing in specialists. By contracting or hiring experts, I ensure the job is done right, maintaining the high-quality service my clients expect. I know I am not always the smartest or best at certain jobs/tasks.
Be humble
Humility is a virtue that I hold in high regard. No matter how experienced or successful one becomes, there’s always room for learning and growth. At our firm, we listen to our clients actively and value their feedback. We understand that we are not infallible and are always ready to admit when we are wrong.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents instilled in me a fundamental principle that has shaped my personal and professional life: treat others as you would like to be treated. This philosophy is not just a superficial mantra; it’s a profound ethos that guides my actions, decisions, and interactions.
For instance, in my career, I’ve encountered numerous situations where this principle proved invaluable. I remember a time when one of my clients was facing a significant challenge with their project. Despite the complexities involved, I stepped in to support them during their time of need, mirroring the empathy and understanding I’d want if I were in their shoes.
This approach not only helped resolve the situation but also strengthened my relationship with the client. Reflecting on this experience, the client shared, “Your willingness to help us during our crisis was a testament to your professionalism and integrity.”
In conclusion, the most impactful thing my parents did for me was teaching me this golden rule. Their wisdom has been a guiding light throughout my life, influencing my actions and shaping my character.
