We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Derek Pham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Derek, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
I believe that self discipline is simple but complicated at the same time. Through much trial and error, for me self discipline consist of figuring out what works for oneself and doing it again and with consistency. That means showing up to do that task or thing consistently over time. Progress is progress as we say big or small. The hardest part or most complicated aspect is the figuring out what works for oneself and doing it again and again, because like most of us we will have doubts or questions about what we are doing. Especially when it’s an area of uncertainty or vulnerability. Keeping it simple and work in seasons, be accountable for your own vision, take proper actions, and have hope and faith to move forward when you are experience a difficult season.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the fundamentals are very important and if I have to choose three piece of wisdom to pass on it would be: Take your work load in seasons, self accountibility is necessary, and always have faith as in knowing no matter how hard, or how uncomfortable it gets, it will be better the next time.
Take your work load in seasons is a reference to balance overwhelm, burn out, fatigue and exhaustion. The best way is to focus on one or two fundamental important task at a time. The seasons can last from weeks to months or even longer in years. Work in an orderly fashion as to stay consistent with the most essential part needed to build on to the next. I think the most common problem is self doubt and impatience to take on more at one season, and it is extremely common to want to take eveything on at a time. Therefore, learning how to pace oneself, slow it down and work smart to build the foundation properly for long lasting growth. It will be much more enjoyable and counterbalance to overwhelm, and exhaustion. It is better and more enjoyable to read a book one page as a time with steadiness and order. The story has a beginning, middle and an end. Whereas jumping from page to page skimming, the best parts will be missed!
Self accountibility is cultivated with a proper vision, action plan, and the feeling of hope to accomplish what you started. Knowing and believing what you are creating is going to happen or be real is surprisingly a challenge for many. You have to rember you were given a vision that was only given to you, not to your friends, to your family members, or to your neighbors. They cannot advise or understand what you are going through. Therefore, you need to have a high level of self accountbility to show up for your own vision, to take actions on it, and knowing and believing that you can do it. It is a very vulnerable feeling, but keep going! Everybody is a critic until they see you actualized your dreams.
Lastly, the ability to have faith through tough times. High level of faith is the ability to believe something good will happen if you stay consistent enough even if you are not able to see it. You will feel overwhelm, you will feel vulnerable, be pushed to your limits, you will feel like giving up, or forget why you started, you will question yourself and have self doubt. Or even will feel like an imposter at some point, but have faith in yourself and in God. Believe that the hard times will prepare you for the next time!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
The best way to balance overwhelm is really to step away from your work load. Disconnect from the problem entirely to gain clarity and focus again. The reason for overwhelm most of the time is you forgot what you are doing. These are examples of overwhelm: you started to do more than you are capable of, you started to take on more work of others and it piles on and on. It is a new area of uncertainty for you or a new direction. It is needing to speak up about something difficult but procrastinating in it, it is making those hard decisions that got added to the to do list. It is also owning your worthy and belief in yourself to move forward even if it is hard, or paralyzing. But really it is about knowing what you are great at and sticking with it, not to be pulled around in all different directions or plans of others.
