Meet DeShaun Williams

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DeShaun Williams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

DeShaun, we are so appreciative of you taking the time to open up about the extremely important, albeit personal, topic of mental health. Can you talk to us about your journey and how you were able to overcome the challenges related to mental issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
This is such an interesting question, for those who don’t know me, My name is DeShaun Williams, and this question actually hits home for me, because in September of 2018, I actually tried to take my own life, but fortunately it failed, and I’m here to continue telling my story. So when it comes to overcoming the challenges related to mental health, I had to actually go through therapy during my time at the hospital, and once I was released I was put on prescription medication, and told to follow up with my primary care physician, which I did for about a year, but during that year, I was healing myself internally, and naturally, so I actually took myself off that medication, because I finally understood where that hurt, and suppressed emotion was coming from, and when I understood it, I could now look at things at a glass half full point of view, instead of a glass half empty point of view. What I mean by this, is that I was now able to understand that things were not happening to me, but they were happening for me, to teach me how to become a stronger person, and become the person that I needed to be in order to help others who are going through similar situations, and now almost four years later, I am able to continue to see things in that exact perspective, and teach, and speak on those things.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
What I do, I believe is very important to today’s society, and that is coaching on Mental Health, and there’s different levels that I go when coaching on this, because we have to understand “What is Mental Health, and how does it affect me?” We have to understand what depression is, and the different levels of it, but we also have to understand, and learn how to maintain our Mental Health in the professional field whether we are working a regular 9-5 job, or we are running our own business, and when we’re running our own business, we have to really be mindful of the Mental Wellness, because when you are first starting out, things may seem like they are going slow, and that we’re not moving forward in anything, and that’s when the holistic part of knowing how to manage your mental wellness comes into play, and then when your business is successful. and you’re the only one running it, you may have more clients than you can take on, and now you’re frustrated about that. What I feel is most exciting about what I do, is meeting individuals who has gone through similar situations such as myself, and hearing their journey, and knowing that after they are done getting coached by me, they become a strong person mentally, and physically, and they become more resilient, and now they have a major success story going forward that help them build a legacy in the future. My brand “DeShaun Williams Industries, LLC” has just relaunched after I took some time to focus on my business, and now that we have relaunched we now offer courses to mental health professionals, and I also teach off these same courses, our main course is called “Mental Wellness Mastery” and it has roughly eight modules that you can teach from, while our secondary course “What is depression” helps you understand the deep levels of depression, and what it may look like.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I believe the three qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge that impacted my journey the most was understanding self-love, gaining a higher level of patience, and actually going through the rough times that I did. These help me in a way that nobody really understands but me, because I used to hate the way I looked, the way I sounded, and the way I dressed, I could not take a picture, and say “Dang you look good” it was always “Boy you are ugly.” So learning how to love myself has helped me accept every flaw about myself, and it has helped me understand that I should put my happiness in the hands of someone else who would ultimately fail me. When it comes to patience, patience was always something that I struggled with, because I could not stand being around people who were just sarcastic all the time, or even those who made constant jokes, or took their sweet time answering my questions, and concerns, and over the years understanding the importance of patience has helped me become a better person in my personal, professional life. When it comes to providing advice to those who are early in the journey, what I can, and will say is that life is what you make of it, don’t expect to find your happiness in someone else, when you’re not even happy with yourself when you’re by yourself, and the next one is about to be a tough pill to swallow, but it needs to be said, and heard, DO NOT expect results overnight, when you are working on yourself, it takes time, and sometimes it takes years, or even an entire lifetime, do not give up just because you’re not seeing the results you desire in 24-48 hours, it’s a journey, not a race.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client” is now someone who wants to better understand what Mental Health is in terms of depression, and how to effectively, and successfully help those who are struggling with it.
