Meet Devone Jones

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Devone Jones. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Devone below.

Hi Devone , great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
While I was growing up in Far Rockaway, Queens New York, I didn’t have many resources. The lack of resources motivated me to look for opportunities outside of my environment. In order for me to achieve that, I would be taking a risk. At a young age, I would search for knowledge and experience all around me. As an adult, I put myself in environments to learn from and become a better person.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My filmmaking journey started in the military. While I was serving onboard USS Dewey (DDG-105), I joined the “Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions.” We put together scripts and made skits for safety stand downs. Our videos increased the morale and decreased the off-duty incidents. That gave me the confidence to pursue filmmaking post-military.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Listen 2. Teamwork
3. Empathy

Listen to your teammates and those you collaborate with.

Be a teamplayer and bring your best.

Understand each other as viewpoints may be different.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I recently started reading “Founder vs Investor” by: Elizabeth Zalman and Jerry Neumann

I decided to read this book because of my creative side and investor side. I love writing, drawing, photography, and film. But, also enjoy helping other companies with their business.
