Meet Devyn Ramnarain

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Devyn Ramnarain a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Devyn, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism comes from my own outlook on life, primarily. I know that happiness is a decision, and that living well is the best way to serve myself and my purpose. I also get a lot of very needed grounding and positivity from my friends and family.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As a model, CPA Firm owner, clinical nutrition expert, and humanitarian, life is pretty busy. In the past several months, I added runway work to my modeling portfolio and a few more accounting employees to my firm. I attended my first pride parade with the Red Cross, and am gearing up to take the RDN exam to become a Registered Dietitian after a lengthy back injury. I am always learning and growing, and cant wait to add more to my roster of fun and busy activities.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Truly, the three qualities that have gotten me through life to this point have been consistency, determination, and honesty.

Consistency is crucial in reaching goals, even if it’s slow. Moving forward at any pace is progress. Progress is better than falling stagnant. I have always struggled with stagnancy. I struggle with Major Depressive Disorder and while letting myself slow down is sometimes very therapeutic when self-care is needed, letting myself stop entirely has never felt good. If you have a nagging feeling that something is missing, you’re probably right.

When the morbs set in, determination is what pulls me out and leads me back to the track. Sometimes it’s extrinsic, coming from a fear of falling behind or from anxiety about disappointing others (or myself) – but it generally comes from within. I built my determination the same way I built confidence as a teen – by simply doing things that terrified me. I failed, a lot. I cried sometimes. However, I had lofty dreams about being the best version of myself that I could be. I still have a long way to go.

Honesty is the most important value to me. It is the only word I have tattooed on my body. Staying honest is the easiest way to move through life because you can always rest on the fact that people feel the way they do about you without interference or a belief that you are someone different than they think (at least without deceit of your own accord). Honesty helps people – both personally and professionally – to trust in your abilities and your opinion. It also shows a sense of great strength, as people often let themselves take the weak way out and simply tell half-truths or lies. Being honest is both easier and more difficult, in that it shows the true you and your true intent.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?
I tend to try and rest on my strengths to make money and flesh out my current enterprises while improving on the areas in which I have learning to do using new ventures. I get bored fairly easily in my professional day-to-day and so starting a new project fulfills both my need to learn and also my need to improve. I am currently fleshing out my dietetics career in studying for the RDN exam, so that is keeping me occupied on the learning front for the time being.
