We recently connected with Dezra Robitson and have shared our conversation below.
Dezra, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
It all starts with my belief in God. For the Bible states, “With GOD all things are possible” I find that it would be no fulfilled purpose without a solid foundation in God. With that being said, my foundation and purpose is based on my spirituality first and foremost. I was blessed to have multiple talents, one of which is photography and videography. I always loved making videos with my friends when I was younger and I knew the power I had to convey an emotion based on the videos that I create. I had the power to make a viewer laugh, cry, feel sad, or happy just to name a few. This is what helped me throughout the difficulty I experienced in my life; creating the ability to display myself behind every project I took through the lens of a camera. I then went to school for broadcast and mass media, where I learned video editing, and production. This has taught me the technical aspect of operating camera, audio, and computer equipment in a more professional setting. Which brings me to why I love doing what I do today and providing a service that enhances my overall vision. The idea is being able to show the viewers a element of myself behind every video and photo that I take. One day my dream is to have my creativity take over the world.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am into several things at the moment, but the photography and videography business is what I have running the longest. I originally learned how to operate a camera in photography classes in high school. We originally had to learn on a SLR camera, which is the opposite of a digital camera where you had to physically wind the film in the camera after each picture you took and then take that film and develop the negatives into photographs. I have began making videos when I was in middle school originally for school projects. I suddenly realized that I have the ability to entertain people with my videos even when trying to report on my school subjects. Thus beginning my passion for camera’s as an art form. I currently own Gold Focus Productions, where specialize in photography and videography (you can follow @goldfocusproductions on IG). I also own a clothing line by the name of Kimante; which is my urban clothing fashion line. This passion came from my learning of digital art and Adobe’s Photoshop software. I originally learned the software to learn to edit photos that I would take from my photography business, but when I seen what photoshop can do, I tried to test the limits; in my abilities and the software. To honor heroes I looked up to as a kid, I began attempting to paint them digitally and posted progression pictures online, enough followers enjoyed them that I decided to place the paintings on clothing thus starting my clothing line Kimante, which can be found at www.kimante.com. Never would of thought my passions would take me here, but I truly enjoy my creativity drifting me into many different directions.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If I had to choose my three most qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that impacted my journey, I would say my curiosity, willingness to learn, and overcoming my fear of new things. My curiosity has helped me think of the most creative thing I can envision and then see if I can create it truly by my own hands, using the tools around me. I use my eagerness to learn to help drive my creativity. It was curiosity that brought me from the world of photography/videography to try my hand at creating artwork in Photoshop. I’m pretty sure my curiosity will lead me to my next big project. The technological advancements since I began my journey has been explosive, I will probably want to try my hand at different new media coming out, thanks to my curiosity. I believe that as long as your willing to learn new things to improve your art, then you will continuously improve your skillset. Another key is to not be afraid to try new things when it comes to your art. I went from a photo and video company to owning a clothing line. Who knows what the future holds, but if you see an opportunity, you should take it.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The person that has been the most helpful in my journey is my best friend Cameron Walker. He believed in me even when my own family did not. We would spend every moment we can together improving our camera and production skills gearing up for making our debut film. We had so many creative ideas that we wanted to share with the world. He would encourage me to try new creative things and show me new products that will soon hit the market, and then try to get me to come up with ideas with how to use those products. There were times that I would not be confident in my skills and ability, and he would be the one to immediately pick me back up and tell me how great I am and how I am the first female creative that he can honestly see make it big! That kind of unconditional support meant the world to me and it’s hard to find people that can get behind you and truly believe in you. He constantly educated me on techniques to help me improve, he pushed me to get to work even when I didn’t feel like it, and was willing to stick by me during my highs and lows of this journey without hesitation. Cameron was everything I needed to become better. Unfortunately Cameron passed away in February of 2022 and now I have to learn to navigate this world on my own.
