Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Diane Strand. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Diane, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
My tenacity and commitment showed up early on. If someone tells me I can’t do something, then I dig in and say, “Just watch me.” Being raised an only child I learned to trust and count on myself. I watched my parents work hard, and move up in their social economic class. They showed me that when times get tough, do not give up, keep your head up and move forward. I draw strength from my blend of passions, life lessons, and a sense of purpose.
Early on in my career, I would sometimes be the only woman in the room. I learned that speaking up and using my voice was one of my superpowers, so I created a discipline within myself to bring things to the table to speak up about. I’m a problem solver, so I keep at it until the problem or task is solved and or finished. When you’re an entrepreneur you can’t strive for balance, you need to integrate. Being in charge of my calendar doesn’t mean I can take off whenever I want, but I can schedule my time how I want. If I need to be somewhere with my kids I’m there; if my business needs my attention I’m there. Some days I can check out at 3 pm, and some days I need to go until 3 am. It does help when you love your work; long hours on a passion can go by very quickly.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My journey as a serial entrepreneur, a producer in the entertainment industry, a video marketer, and a career pathway trailblazer in visual, performing, and digital arts has been nothing short of a dream come true. I’m Diane Strand, the majority owner of JDS Video & Media Productions, Inc., the creative producer behind JDS Actors Studio, and the co-founder of the nonprofit 501(c)(3) JDS Creative Academy. I’m the creator of the international digital arts festival DigiFest® Temecula, and the TV Show Spirit of Innovation. These endeavors are the embodiment of my passion, and I find nothing more exciting and special than the opportunity to mentor, coach, and provide pathways for aspiring creatives in the ARTS.
One of the most exciting developments on our horizon is the rollout of “Arts Across America” by JDS Creative Academy. This initiative was inspired by our “Art in a Box” donation to Michelle’s Place in August 2022, which I had the pleasure of curating. It provided an arts curriculum and all the necessary materials for art classes for cancer patients. I’m thrilled to announce that we’re expanding this vision to bring the arts to diverse communities and audiences Across America. This endeavor represents our commitment to making a positive impact and fostering creativity, inclusivity, and diversity.
We are also gearing up for our 8th annual international award-winning digital media festival DigiFest® Temecula 2024 taking place virtually and in person on April 19,20,21. The festival submissions are open. This competition and festival is for students, emerging professionals, and digital media content creator experts. The categories service many genres and mediums in the digital multimedia arts world.
Thank you for allowing me to share my journey, I look forward to all the adventures and opportunities that the future holds. Let’s create, inspire, and make dreams come true together.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Resilience has been my anchor throughout the highs and lows of my career. The entertainment industry is known for its unpredictability, and there were many moments of rejection and uncertainty. I’ve learned that the ability to bounce back and stay committed to the vision is crucial. My advice to those starting their journey is to cultivate resilience by embracing every challenge as an opportunity for growth. Remember, each setback is a stepping stone toward your goals. I am a firm believer that you either Win or you Learn. How you win is by finding value in the tiny wins, building the momentum by consistency until you get to the bigger wins. Step outside your comfort zone and remember, “no,” can also mean not right now. Keep going.
2. Networking and Relationship Building. In the entertainment world, connections are key. Building a strong network and fostering meaningful relationships can open doors you never thought possible. As a producer, I always have a backup in a pinch and that comes from having built relationships of value. My business is built and influenced by the people I’ve met and collaborated with along the way. To those just starting out, I’d say, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, attend events, and reach out to professionals in your field. Be genuine and build relationships based on trust and mutual support. We do business with people we know, like, and trust. Be present in your community and get involved. It doesn’t matter if you are a brick-and-mortar or an online business. Be active, provide value, and show up for others, and they will show up for you.
3. Adaptability. The entertainment industry constantly evolves, and the ability to adapt is essential. Throughout my career, I’ve transitioned from acting to producing, and later, to becoming a serial entrepreneur, best-selling author, speaker, executive producer, and then co-founding and leading a nonprofit. Being open to change and new opportunities has been instrumental, showing up and saying “yes,” and not letting fear get in the way. Being able to look back and connect the dots tells you exactly why you are where you are in life. You will see not only why you adapted and/or pivoted, but also why the next step is in line with who you are, and how your journey unfolds. I advise newcomers to stay curious and embrace change. Don’t limit yourself to a single path. Explore various aspects of your industry and be prepared to adapt to new circumstances and opportunities. I started in this industry as an actor and now I find myself on more stages and in front of the camera more now than when I was “acting,” it just looks different. I am right where I’m supposed to be living a life of purpose and passion making dreams come true which in the end make my dreams come true too.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I’ve been blessed with amazing support from several key individuals who have played indispensable roles in aiding me in overcoming challenges and cultivating skills for success.
First and foremost, my partner in business and life, Scott Strand, has been my unwavering support and constant companion throughout our personal and professional endeavors. His insights, encouragement, and shared passion for the arts have been integral to our shared journey. Together, we’ve weathered highs and lows, tackled challenges head-on, and constructed three thriving successful businesses all while raising three children.
In the early stages of my career, mentors in the entertainment industry were pivotal. Their guidance, wisdom, and willingness to share their experiences significantly shaped my understanding of the industry. Drawing inspiration from these seasoned professionals, I developed a profound belief in the power of mentorship, motivating me to pay it forward by becoming a mentor myself.
The collaborative nature of the entertainment and media industry underscores the significance of effective teamwork. I’ve had the privilege of working with incredibly talented individuals, both in front of and behind the camera, at JDS Video & Media Productions Inc., JDS Actors Studio, JDS Creative Academy, and DigiFest® Temecula. Their diverse skills and perspectives have been crucial, turning each project into a collective effort fueled by a shared commitment to our mission.
Beyond individual connections, the support from community partners and organizations has been vital, particularly in my role as the Executive Director of JDS Creative Academy.
When honing my skills, I’ve always found that community involvement plays a crucial role. Whether it’s being a member of the Chamber of Commerce or other various organizations, there are valuable lunch-to-learn opportunities that enhance one’s knowledge. I strongly believe in community engagement—it’s a collaborative spirit that brings everything together. My passion lies in workforce and economic development. I initially joined the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) in North County SD when launching my business. Upon moving to Riverside County, I continued my involvement, in the Southwest Riverside County EDC, contributing several hours of time and free video work to offset membership costs and foster collaborations. Serving on boards, from being a member to currently serving as President, allowed me to learn about nonprofit operations.
Reflecting on Riverside County’s workforce development, Supervisor Chuck Washington appointed me as a board member a decade ago. This unexpected journey led me to create a Title-17 job training program. One opportunity that comes to mind is during the early years of the nonprofit when working with the County’s office of aging, they provided us with our first employee. Since our collaboration provided hands-on computer training in programs such as Microsoft Word and Quickbooks. I received an administrator free for two years and her wages were covered by the County. These experiences shaped the early stages of my business. I served as an ambassador for three years, attending ribbon cuttings and events to welcome new members. I delved into the Women in Business committee, chairing it four times and emceeing live events. Through giving, I received so much more in building an amazing foundation for business growth.
Collaborations with the Economic Development Coalition of Southwest California, Riverside County Workforce Development, and the Temecula Chamber of Commerce have extended our reach and impact. Together, we’ve worked towards a common goal of fostering creativity, inclusivity, and economic development. This collaborative spirit, coupled with the encouragement from my husband, insights from mentors, and the dedication of my team and community partners, forms a powerful network.
